IRVING – Matt McGloin wasn’t invited to the scouting combine last February. Two months later, he went undrafted.
But none of that matters to Dallas defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. All he knows is McGloin hasn’t looked anything like an undrafted rookie quarterback in his first two career starts, including a 28-23 win over Houston two weeks ago in which the Penn State alum became the fourth passer since the 1970 merger to throw three touchdown passes and no interceptions in his first start.
“Believe me, he doesn’t play like a rookie,” Kiffin said. “You’re saying, I’m just saying that. Go look at his rating. Go look at the tape. He’s making really, really good decisions. I’m really surprised he’s doing so well.”
The Cowboys’ Tony Romo, himself an undrafted player, has also taken notice.
“I always root for the undrafted kids that come up and then have a chance to play and play pretty well,” Romo said in a conference call with Bay Area reporters on Tuesday. “I think that’s always exciting and good for the league, and I wish him the best.”
