OXNARD, Calif. – With second-year guard Ron Leary healthy, the Cowboys finally have the position battle they wanted to see heading into training camp.
The team arrived in California hoping Leary could push left guard Nate Livings. But with Livings (foot) and Leary (calf) out with injuries, the competition stalled.
Both are healthy now and the coaches have their eyes on the challenger, who split first-team reps with Livings on Tuesday.
“Ron had a good spring after really improving over the course of last season,” Garrett said Tuesday of Leary, a 6-foot-3, 331-pound undrafted rookie last season. “He came back in really good shape. His weight was good, he looked lean.”
One day after watching Leary’s first practice of camp, Garrett said the Memphis-ex has made “significant” improvement in terms of understanding the playbook. The coach also likes Leary’s quickness and “nasty nature.”
The other guard position is also unsettled. With incumbent Mackenzy Bernadeau (hamstring) sidelined, David Arkin and Kevin Kowalski are sharing reps.
Kowalski left the field Monday after suffering an injury with about 30 minutes left in the workout.
