SAN ANTONIO — Connor Lloyd’s two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the 10th lifted the McNeese State Cowboys to a 6-5 victory Friday over UTSA at Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Lloyd delivered off of UTSA freshman reliever Chance Kirby, who entered the game in the seventh and had shut out the Cowboys until they broke through in the first extra inning.
With two out, Lewis Guilbeau started the rally when he reached on an error by UTSA shortstop Tyler Straub. James Cantu bunted for a hit, putting runners at first and second.
Lloyd followed with a single to left to score Guilbeau, ending UTSA’s four-game winning streak.
The four-game series between UTSA (6-3) and McNeese (6-4) will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday in Lake Charles.
Notes: UTSA’s Brock Hartson started and settled for his third no-decision of the season.
The ace of the staff pitched into the sixth when he gave up three straight singles to open the inning. McNeese ended up scoring four runs in the frame, with three of them charged to Hartson, to take a 5-3 lead.
Officially, Hartson worked five innings and surrendered four runs, three of them earned. He walked one and struck out five.
Outfielder Kevin Markham returned to action after missing the past two games with a sore knee. He entered the game in the eighth as a pinch runner and ended up scoring the tying run to make it 5-5 in a two-run UTSA uprising.
In Markham’s only at bat, UTSA’s leading hitter flied to center for the last out in the ninth.
