CHICAGO – With the wind chill expected to be near zero, Monday night’s game with the Bears could be the coldest regular season outing in Cowboys’ history.

The Chicago Tribune’s forecast for the frigid affair calls for a game-time temperature of 17 degrees. With winds out of the west at 16 mph, the wind chill is expected to be 2.

The Cowboys’ coldest regular season game – 16 degrees – was at St. Louis on Dec. 15, 1963. Dallas won 28-24. The franchise’s coldest game ever – minus 13 degrees – was the famed “Ice Bowl,” the NFL championship game the Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Dec. 31, 1967.

“The goal is you’re not thinking about the cold,” Dallas coach Jason Garrett said. “…You (can’t) let the elements be a factor.”

The Cowboys have experience playing in freezing weather this year. They downed the New York Giants 24-21 on Nov. 24 at the Meadowlands, where the temperature at kickoff was 25 degrees with a wind chill of 18.

“We had success in New York a couple of weeks ago,” tight end Jason Witten said. “When you go against those environments, you can’t let it get it get in the way of what you want to accomplish as a football team.”

Tony Romo was 23 of 38 for 250 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against the Giants, raising his record in games when the temperature is below 36 degrees to 1-3.

Romo has plenty of experience playing in cold weather after growing up in Wisconsin and playing at Eastern Illinois.

“I played a lot of our games in cold weather and I think you become comfortable with it over time,” he told reporters last week in Irving. “The more technically sound and fundamental you are with your throwing motion, you can neutralize that stuff and I think it can be an advantage for a football team.”

Romo said he likely won’t wear a glove Monday night. He didn’t wear one in New Jersey last month either.

“I think (either) you feel comfortable throwing in the conditions or you need something to help you,” he said. “I think guys wear a glove because they don’t feel strongly with the grip that they have. That’s just part of it. It can help some guys. Other guys might not need it as much.”

The temperature in Chicago late Sunday morning is 25 degrees, but the Weather Channel said it feels more like 14 degrees. Snow is falling, but there shouldn’t be any Monday night, according to forecasts.
