DALLAS – DeMarco Murray and other Dallas Cowboys players didn’t let Sunday’s gut-wrenching 37-36 loss to the Green Bay Packers stop them from spreading some holiday cheer at several North Texas children’s hospitals.
Murray said signing autographs at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children helped him put football in perspective.
“You think about yesterday and you are mad about that,” Murray said, “and then as soon as you step (in) here, you totally forget about it. It’s the last thing that crosses your mind. Just knowing what these kids are going through on a daily basis, how much fight they have, just makes you look up to them.”
Murray ripped off his helmet in frustration after Tony Romo sealed the Cowboys’ fate by throwing an interception with 1:24 left and the Packers leading by the final score.
Murray had reason to be angry. The running back finished with 134 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, but he gained just 41 yards in the second half as the Cowboys inexplicably abandoned the running game that had clicked so well before halftime.
Asked if he was calmer this morning, Murray said, “I’m just focused on being here with the kids and trying to help them out as much as I can.”
Asked if it was tough for him to get out of bed Monday morning, Murray said, “Like I said, once I knew we were coming here, it just touched my heart and I’m always willing to do this. Such a blessing and I cherish these types of moments just to put a smile on these types of kids faces. This is something we will never forget and it’s something we will never forget as players.”
Murray is close to becoming the first 1,000-yard rusher for Dallas since Julius Jones had 1,084 in 2006. Murray has a career-best 977 rushing yards in his 12 games this season with two contests left.
