SAN ANTONIO – Don’t let Detroit being ranked near the bottom of the league in defense and sacks fool you.
With tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Failey leading the way, the Lions sport a stout defensive line, a big reason why they rank near the top of the league in interceptions (10) and third-down defense (29.9 percent).
“It’s the best front we’ve seen,” DallasCowboys.com quoted Cowboys rookie center Travis Frederick as saying.
The cornerstone of the Detroit front four is Suh, who is one of the league’s most disruptive tackles with 3½ sacks and 14½ quarterback knockdowns and hurries.
ProFootballFocus.com ranks Frederick as the league’s 12th best center, but he’ll likely need plenty of help from guards Brian Waters and Ron Leary.
“Sacks in general don’t always really tell the whole story of how good or how disruptive a defensive line is,” Waters told reporters in Irving. “The pressure they get on the quarterback, the tackles for losses, the way they penetrate, (all of it allows) their linebackers to make a lot of plays because those guys are getting in the backfield.”
