IRVING – One of the bright spots that came out of Sunday’s 30-21 loss at San Diego was the play of the offensive line.
According to ProFootballFocus.com, left tackle Tyron Smith, center Travis Frederick and right guard Brian Waters in his first start graded “in the green” as run blockers as the Cowboys rushed for 92 yards. Pass protection-wise, right tackle Doug Free got a high mark even though Tony Romo was sacked three times.
It was an impressive showing, considering tight end Jason Witten logged a season-low four snaps as a blocker, meaning Smith, Frederick and Co. were pretty much on their own.
“I thought they played well,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We ran for nearly six yards per carry. We blocked a defensive line that has traditionally rushed the passer well…Dwight Freeney is a great player and has been a great player in this league for a long time. I thought we blocked him. I thought we blocked some other guys well. Tony had time to throw the football.”
Asked if Waters “held up well,” Garrett said, “He did. The whole game, he didn’t seem to have any issues. He plays with that nasty demeanor you like. He was good.”
Owner Jerry Jones also heaped praise on the offensive line.
“They frankly played a real good ball game,” he told Dallas’ KRLD-FM. “They’ve been playing well. Tony’s got plenty of time to make the throws.”
