LOS ANGELES – Cowboys starting left guard Nate Livings just can’t seem to get healthy.
Citing anonymous sources, ESPNDallas.com reported Friday that Livings will undergo surgery on his right knee. It would be the second time in nearly six months he’s had the knee operated on and would likely sideline him for two to four weeks, placing his participation in the Sept. 8 season opener against the Giants in jeopardy.
In other news, the Dallas Morning News is reporting that the coaching staff informed several starters, including quarterback Tony Romo, that they won’t be playing in the preseason opener against Miami on Sunday night in Canton, Ohio.
Livings’ first surgery was in February. He re-aggravated it during offseason practices in the spring. On Thursday, he sat out practice because of soreness in the knee.
Livings also missed the first week of training camp with a cut foot.
The Cowboys have been hit hard by injuries during camp. In addition to Livings, starting defensive end Anthony Spencer underwent knee surgery last week and is expected to miss two to four weeks. Backup defensive end Tyrone Crawford is out for the season after tearing an Achilles tendon on the first day of camp.
The offensive line is also without starting right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, who has yet to practice after injuring his hamstring during the conditioning run at the start of camp. Several other offensive linemen are injured, including backup offensive tackle Jermey Parnell, who has missed most of camp with a hamstring injury.
Livings started all 16 games last season after signing with Dallas as a free agent. In his absence, second-year player Ronald Leary has been lining up at left guard with the first team.
