ARLINGTON – Tony Romo just won the Super Bowl.

Or so it seemed when he jumped into Jason Witten’s arms, toppled over and then recovered quickly to sit upright with his arms raised triumphantly.

The quarterback’s spontaneous celebration punctuated his 7-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Harris with 35 seconds left, a clutch pitch-and-catch that lifted the Dallas Cowboys to a 27-23 win over Minnesota on Sunday before 85,360 at AT&T Stadium.

With the season quite possibly on the brink, Romo coolly completed 7-of-9 passes for 90 yards while marching the Cowboys 90 yards in nine plays. The 2-minute, 9-second drive came one week after the 31-30 meltdown in Detroit and allowed Dallas (5-4) to retain sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

It also saved the Cowboys from trying to explain how they lost to a team that entered the game 1-6 with one of the NFL’s worst defenses.

Given all that, Romo had good reason to go goofy.

“It’s a joy – you won the football game,” he said of his celebration. “…I just picture a Michael Jordan-over-Xavier McDaniel kind of look, where he’s just kind of aggressive being, ‘Yes!’

“That’s the feeling you have. Without swearing, you want to be like that.”

The 19th game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime of Romo’s career began with 2:44 left and included passes of 11 yards to Witten, 18 yards to Cole Beasley and a 34-yard strike to Dez Bryant that placed Dallas at the Minnesota 21. Four plays later, Romo looked off a covered Witten, stepped up in the pocket and delivered the ball to Harris, who made the grab at the 3 before diving into the end zone between two defenders.

“It was as important of a drive was we’ve had all year long,” coach Jason Garrett said.

Once again the Cowboys struggled to move the ball in the first half, producing only a pair of field goals to trail 10-6 at the break.

“It was important for us to win,” said Romo, who was 31-of-54 for 337 yards with two TDs and an interception. “We never doubted we’d find a way.”

Center Travis Frederick said Romo was a calming influence in the huddle.

“He worked to keep everybody else steady,” Frederick said. “He’s very confident and there’s never any change in his demeanor.”

Said Garrett, “I know a lot of people want to talk about some of these plays or games where things didn’t work out. But if you really look at his body of work and you look at it objectively, he’s done this kind of stuff a lot.

“…Anybody who knows football and understands football and has followed our team, understands what a fantastic player he is. That was on display again today.”
