OXNARD, Calif. – For Tony Romo, one of the best things about playing for Bill Parcells was the coach’s humor.
“He was pretty funny,” Romo said. “I think more than anything, people don’t realize how funny Bill was. He can get on you. He’d be tough. You’d hate him one minute and love him the next.
“So I appreciated his humor more than anything. He knew the right buttons to push.”
Asked Monday for his memories of Parcells, Romo told a story about the most recent communication he had with the two-time Super Bowl champion, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
“After the draft (in 2003), I came to Dallas as a free agent instead of going to a couple of other places,” Romo said. “Dallas had given me, I think it was $10,000, which was a lot of money at the time, but a lot of other teams were offering $15 or $20,000 or something, but I chose Dallas to hopefully make the team. And Bill was instrumental in me getting there.”
Flash forward to this spring, when Romo became the highest-paid player in franchise history by signing a six-year, $108 million extension that includes a guaranteed $55 million. Shortly after inking the historic pact, the quarterback received a text from Parcells that read, “I was just wondering if coming to Dallas had worked out for you.”
“I had to laugh,” Romo said. “It was pretty funny.”
Romo also told a humorous story about another Hall of Fame inductee in the Class of 2013: Cowboys offensive lineman Larry Allen.
“Me and Witten,” Romo said, “were rookies and Larry would make us go get the stuff that he needed for different times, whether it was a can of dip or whatever it was: ‘Hey, Romo, you got that dip?’ Nah, I’ll go get it right now.
“He was great. He was always good to us.”
