Cowboys rookie safety J.J. Wilcox won’t return to training camp in Oxnard, Calif., after the death of his mother, coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday.
Marshell Wilcox died Tuesday in Georgia after battling Lupus.
“He’s going to be with his family this week,” Garrett said of Wilcox. “He’s not going to come back to California. We will see him in Dallas after all of those arrangements are taken care of.”
Wilcox, a third-round pick from Georgia Southern, flew to Georgia Sunday to be by his mother’s side.
“It’s tough for anybody, a young person, an adult,” Garrett said. “Obviously, a very difficult time and we have complete respect for what is going on in his life right now and want to give him all the opportunity to make sure he takes care of that the way he needs to. All the support systems are available to him. I think it (the death of a loved one) is just a very difficult thing in life.”
The Cowboys break camp on Friday to travel to Arizona, where they will play the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. After the game, they will fly to Dallas.
