IRVING – With Anthony Spencer still slowed by knee surgery and Tyrone Crawford out for the season with a torn Achilles, the Cowboys must rely on perennial Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware, solid veteran Jason Hatcher and a collection of journeymen and youngsters to pressure the Giants’ Eli Manning in the opener Sunday night.
So does knowing there’s a good chance Manning might be able to set his feet and scan the field put more pressure on the secondary? It’s a question that was posed to Cowboys nickel corner Orlando Scandrick on Monday.
“I mean, does it put more pressure on the secondary or does it put more pressure on the coaches to get other people ready to play?” Scandrick said, referring presumably to defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, defensive line coach Rod Marinelli and defensive line assistant Leon Lett. “As a secondary, we need to go out and do our job regardless. It’s our job to go out and stop the pass and make tackles and show up in the running game. As far as everything else, you can’t worry about that.”
Scandrick went on to indicate that he believes Ware and Co. will indeed put some heat on Manning.
“It helps to have pressure on anybody’s quarterback,” Scandrick said. “You want them to feel uncomfortable, but I don’t think that the guys that we have on this team are (not capable) of getting pressure.”
Aiding the Cowboys will be the injuries that have depleted the Giants offensive line. Center David Baas and David Diehl won’t be ready for Week 1, forcing Giants coach Tom Coughlin to move guard Kevin Boothe to center and insert James Brewer at left guard, a position the third-year pro has never played.
