Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin excels at rushing the passer, but his comedy game and subtlety could both apparently use some work after his April Fools’ joke met with criticism for its insensitivity.

Irvin, 27, tweeted early Wednesday morning that he’d been arrested after driving drunk, apologizing preemptively to the team and his fans.

Before this hits the media I just wanna apologize to my fans and the @Seahawks organization once again. I made a terrible decision b driving

After I had a few drinks. I will do everything to get ur trust back and will become a better person after this.

But a half hour later, Irvin let his followers in on the joke. Some congratulated him on the ruse, but many others were outraged at Irvin’s use of a false DUI arrest in his joke.

And — as is usually the case with social media — they weren’t afraid to tell him about it.

Because drinking and driving is the perfect setup for a joke! RT “@BIrvin_WVU11: How many of yall thought I was serious ?! Haha April fools”

@BIrvin_WVU11 Idiot! As an alcohol and drug counselor there is nothing funny about personal/legal consequences of addiction. #classless

Irvin did have his defenders, however, including Sports Illustrated’s Robert Klemko:

Finally, Irvin took to Twitter to apologize for his joke and announce that he’s taking the rest of the day off from social media.

Ok it was a joke didn’t meant to disrespect anybody. Damn relax
