IRVING – The Dallas Cowboys received good news Monday regarding the condition of quarterback Tony Romo after he left Sunday night’s 36-31 win over the New York Giants with what appeared to be injured ribs.
Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said X-rays on Romo’s rib area were negative, meaning he likely will play at Kansas City (1-0) Sunday.
“We feel optimistic with the tests coming back negative,” Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas, per NFL.com. “He’ll be sore, but something he’ll be able to play with, as it looks right now.”
Romo left the game shortly before halftime after get crunched between Giants pass rushers Mathias Kiwanuka and Justin Trattou. Kyle Orton played the one remaining snap for Dallas before halftime before Romo returned for the start of the third quarter.
Romo is no stranger to rib injuries. In an overtime win at San Francisco in Week 2 of the 2011 season, he suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung.
With a win at the resurgent Chiefs, the Cowboys can improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 2008 season, when they went on to finish 9-7 and out of the playoffs after a 44-6 loss at Philadelphia in the season finale.
Romo likely won’t talk to the media until Wednesday. Coach Jason Garrett’s news conference is set for 4:15 p.m. Monday.
