IRVING – Two team leaders applauded Jerry Jones’ decision to retain Jason Garrett as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
“He’s a great leader, motivating us each and every week no matter what the circumstance is,” defensive end DeMarcus Ware said Tuesday after the players cleaned out their lockers and had their final team meeting with Garrett and owner Jerry Jones.
“He has three seasons where, yeah, he’s been 8-8 and not (won) the NFC East championship, but that let’s you know he is there. We do have opportunities and we can’t forget that. He’s a great coach. I’m behind him 100 percent.”
Tight end Jason Witten said it’s “very reassuring” that Jones isn’t ready to give up on Garrett, who is 29-27 since replacing Wade Phillips midway through the 2010 season.
The Cowboys finished 8-8 for the third straight season after losing 24-22 to the Eagles in the de facto NFC East championship game Sunday night.
“I think the guys in this locker room would do anything for Coach Garrett,” tight end Jason Witten said. “We’re so fortunate to have him. You want to win for each other but you also want to win for a guy that pours everything into your football as a head coach and gives you every opportunity. Ultimately you understand it’s a bottom-line business and you come up short, but that was great for me to hear and I think for our team to hear because he’s very well respected in this locker room and guys are all in for him as the head coach.”
