Marshawn's media mutinies

Marshawn Lynch wasn’t always like this; he wasn’t always so adversarial with the media.

Once upon a time, though he never sought the spotlight, the star Seattle Seahawks running back had fun with the press. After his rookie year, when he played for the Buffalo Bills, he did a relatively normal interview at a Super Bowl XLII event. He once spent an evening at a Buffalo Applebee’s with ESPN’s Kenny Mayne. And of course he helped NFL Films break down his famous Beast Quake run.

But after he was traded to Seattle in 2010, something changed. Maybe it was his DUI arrest around that time. Maybe it was his eventual contract extension. Maybe he just grew tired of talking to the press, and had the support of the Seahawks to be himself.

We would ask him ourselves, but we’re pretty sure he wouldn’t give us an answer.

NFL.com’s Michael Silver, in an interview before last year’s Super Bowl, got Lynch to talk about why he is so media-shy.

I’ve never seen anybody win the game in the media. But at the same time, I understand what it could do for you, if you wanted to be someone who talks a lot. But that’s not me.

And I’m not as comfortable, especially at the position I play, making it about me. As a running back, it takes five offensive linemen, a tight end, a fullback and possibly two wide receivers, in order to make my job successful. But when I do interviews, most of the time it’ll come back to me. There are only so many times I can say, ‘I owe it to my offensive linemen,’ or, ‘The credit should go to my teammates,’ before it becomes run down.

But Lynch’s relationship with the media has chilled to sub-zero in the past year, ever since the Seahawks rose to national prominence with their appearance in Super Bowl XLVIII. Above is a roundup of the past year in the rebellious life of Marshawn Lynch, culminating in this week’s lead-up to Super Bowl XLIX.
