LOS ANGELES – Facing an intoxication manslaughter charge and showing signs of a substance abuse problem, Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent retired Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys announced Thursday.

Brent was at the wheel during a one-vehicle accident Dec. 8 that resulted in the death of practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown, a former member of the San Antonio Talons. According to police, Brent’s blood alcohol limit, more than twice the legal limit in Texas.

“I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order,” Brent said in a statement. “Those priorities are more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football.

“This is the right decision for me and something I have given a lot of thought to. I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order. Those priorities are more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football. I love the game very much. I love my teammates, but this is the right thing for me to do.”
The NFL was expected to announce whether it would suspend Brent before the Cowboys departed for training camp Friday. Brent, 25, faces a Sept. 23 court date.

Brent’s troubles continued during the offseason. In the months after the accident, he failed two court-ordered drug tests for marijuana and spent a week in jail after a Dallas County judge rescinded his bond.

The Cowboys have shown Brent constant support since the accident, a stance underscored by the club placing him on the non-injury reserve list to fulfill a promise the club made to Brown’s mother.

“I’ve forgiven (Brent),” Stacey Jackson told WFAA-TV in Dallas, “because he has enough on his plate with just reliving the whole thing over and over, and that’s going to be for the rest of his life.”

The accident derailed a promising career. During the 2012 season, Brent recorded 22 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble. He played three seasons for Dallas after it selected him in the seventh round of the 2010 supplemental draft.
Brent’s retirement leaves the Cowboys four spots shy of a full 90-man training camp roster.
