Tony Romo
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is expected to miss the team’s offseason workouts and possibly its three-day minicamp in June after undergoing surgery last month to remove a cyst from his back, the team’s website reported Tuesday morning.
The surgery has prevented Romo from participating in the club’s quarterback throwing session that began last month and has also forced him to put aside his offseason golf and basketball, DallasCowboys.com reported.
The Cowboys’ OTA workouts begin today. Romo and Coach Jason Garrett are expected to discuss Romo’s health Tuesday at team headquarters in Irving.
Romo signed a six-year, $108 million contract extension in March. Backup quarterback Kyle Orton is expected to handle most of the team’s first-team reps under center this offseason.
“If this was the regular season and I had to play next week, I could,” Romo told the Dallas Morning News on Monday night. “This is just about being smart.
“That’s why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp. Now way will it have an impact. And I still think there’s a good chance I’m on the field for minicamp.”
Still, there is concern that Romo will be missing valuable time during OTAs with rookie center Travis Frederick. The quarterback also will miss time to become familiar with second-round tight end Gavin Escobar, who is expected to help the team use more two tight-end sets this season.
