DeMarcus Ware needs two more sacks to become the Cowboys’ career leader.
The eighth-year defensive end enters Sunday’s game with St. Louis one behind Harvey Martin, who collected 114 sacks while playing defensive end for Dallas from 1973-83.
The NFL didn’t start charting sacks until 1982, but the Cowboys have tracked them since the start of the franchise in 1960. Ware tops the chart since 1982, with Jim Jeffcoat (1983-94) in second with 94.5.
“He’s a very talented player, but what makes him special is the kind of guy he is and the approach he takes,” coach Jason Garrett said of Ware. “He practices really hard, the team is really important to him, his role on the team is important. He’s one of our best leaders and certainly one of our best players.”
Ware is tied with defensive tackle Jason Hatcher and linebacker Bruce Carter for the team lead in sacks with two. Ware also had a team-high eight quarterback pressures and an interception, but he’s still without a tackle after two games.
“His impact on the game is significant every week even if he didn’t have to make a play,” Garrett said. “I know for a fact if you look in the game plan books of the opposing team it starts with him. They circle him, they star him, they highlight, they dot him. They’ve have a plan for DeMarcus Ware, and they’ve had one for eight or nine years now. He keeps coming.”
