Seattle Seahawks first-year receiver Chris Matthews couldn’t have picked a bigger and better stage for his first-career NFL catch — a 44-yard bomb from Russell Wilson that set up Seattle’s first touchdown of Super Bowl XLIX.
In the second quarter Sunday, on second-and-5 from the Seattle 45-yard line, Wilson dropped back, stepped out of pressure and heaved the ball deep right toward Matthews, who had a step on New England cornerback Kyle Arrington. Matthews was facing the wrong way, but twisted his body around as he leaped up for the impressive catch.
That set the Seahawks up at the Patriots’ 11-yard line, and three plays later, running back Marshawn Lynch was in the end zone. The score tied the game at 7 toward the end of the second quarter.
