Cowboys rookie safety J.J. Wilcox returned to practice after spending several days in Georgia mourning the death of his mother.

Wilcox was gone for 10 days after his mother, Marshell, died Aug. 13 after battling lupus. She was 49.

“It’s tough, it’s tough,” Wilcox said, per the team’s web site. “When you get accustomed to somebody for 33 years with my dad and 22 years with me and they are all of sudden gone, it’s tough. It’s still fighting me to this day. I felt it a little at practice. But I’m going to be strong, be blessed and I’m going to keep pushing.”

It’s uncertain whether Wilcox will play against Cincinnati on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

“I know this is my job and this is my obligation,” he said. “It’s tough leaving my family back home, but it’s something I have to do to support my family.”

Wilcox said he cried when he learned that fellow rookie B.W. Webb wore his jersey during a practice before the Arizona game last week.

“It made a difference,” Wilcox said. “When I saw that, it definitely brought tears to my eyes. It let me know that the guys still love me and they’re still backing me 110 percent when I’m not here. So that makes a difference.”
