SAN ANTONIO – Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick was looking for Mike Ditka after shutting down Victor Cruz in the 24-21 win over the New York Giants last month.
On Monday night in Chicago, Scandrick and Ditka could come face to face.
The Bears will retire at halftime the No. 89 jersey Ditka wore while starring as a tight end for the venerable franchise from 1961-66. If Scandrick wants to meet Ditka, there’s his chance.
After the victory over the Giants, Scandrick was waiting for reporters in the locker room, shouting, “Where’s Mike Ditka?”
Scandrick was angry at Ditka for comments he made about the Cruz matchup on ESPN that morning.
“I heard them say they were going to look at the Victor Cruz matchup, so I sat up in bed,” Scandrick said. “And Mike Ditka said, ‘The Cowboys don’t have anyone who can cover Victor Cruz.’
“I said, ‘What? Is that the same Mike Ditka who traded his whole draft for one player? When I heard that, I embraced the challenge. And I proved once again that I’m a good player and I’m getting better.”
Cruz finished with just two catches for 27 yards. On one of those catches, Scandrick stripped the ball away, a turnover that safety Jeff Heath grabbed out of the air and returned for the game’s first score.
Ditka played six seasons for the Bears, winning rookie of the year honors in 1961 and earning five Pro Bowl trips. He also helped the club win the 1963 NFL title.
In 1988, Ditka became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
