OXNARD, Calif. – After the usual slow rookie start at training camp, rookie tight end Gavin Escobar is starting to find his footing, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Saturday.

“What we’ve seen the last couple of days is him kind of gaining confidence enough to start showing who he is,” Garrett said. “We’ve put a lot of stuff in each and every day. So, for the veterans, it’s a challenge. For the young guys, it’s really a challenge. They’ve seen it before. They saw it in the spring. But you can sometimes see when it starts to really click in for a guy. They start playing faster. They start playing more decisively. And we’re starting to see some of that from Escobar the last couple of days.”

With second-year pro James Hanna sidelined with a hamstring injury, the 6-foot-6, 249-pound Escobar is lining up with Jason Witten in the team’s two-tight end sets.

“I like Gavin,” Garrett said. “Gavin’s a smart guy. He’s tall and long, which we think are good traits for a tight end. Length, meaning his arm length. He has a chance to be an on the line of scrimmage blocker, a Y, because of his length. He has to get stronger. We knew that when we drafted him. He’s working very hard to get stronger, but that’s a work in progress. He’s a very natural pass catcher, we saw that on tape. He has a very good feel for route running, and we saw that on tape.”
