IRVING –Tony Romo gave his Dallas Cowboys teammates an emotional lift on a downer day for the club by attending the final team meeting of the year.
The quarterback’s appearance at Valley Ranch was his first public sighting since he underwent back surgery Friday. Reporters spotted Romo walking slowly away from the team meeting accompanied by media relations director Rich Dalrymple.
“I think that just speaks to what he is, going to find a way to come in, see the guys,” tight end Jason Witten said. “It was obviously an emotional time…It’s just what he’s all about. I thought it was great of him to come and be here and just share his time. He’s a big part of this team.
“That was very stand-up of him to be here in the midst of the pain I’m sure he’s in.”
Several observers, including Hall of Fame quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion Troy Aikman, have questioned whether Romo will be able to bounce back from his second back surgery in eight months. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last week he expects Romo to be ready by the time spring practice begins in May.
Romo, who turns 34 in April, had surgery last spring to remove a cyst. The club said he injured his back in the 24-23 win over Washington on Dec. 22.
“Obviously, it’s been a tough eight months for him physically,” Witten said. “But I feel confident in hm. I know what he’s made of. I know how he competes. I know how he trains. He’ll bounce back and be even better next year. He’ll used this time to evaluate and get healthy and provide perspective and be a better quarterback because of it. I’m confident he’ll come back. I know what he’s made of. He’ll bounce back and bet better than he’s ever been. I believe that to the bottom of my heart.”
Romo left team headquarters without talking to the media.
