DALLAS – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said repeatedly that Jason Garrett’s job is safe, but tight end Jason Witten apparently doesn’t want to leave anything to chance.

In an interview with NBC’s Bob Costas that will air before tonight’s do-or-die game with the Eagles, Witten heaped praise on Garrett when asked if he’s seen the coach’s “demeanor change while he’s been on the hot seat.”

“I haven’t,” Witten said. “Jason Garrett’s got an unbelievable demeanor, just poise, just a great football coach. This is why you want to win games like this – obviously (quarterback) Tony (Romo) for getting us into this situation, you want to win for him – but you want to win for coach Garrett because we’re lucky to have him and you want him to have that type of success for a long time.”

Garrett is 24-23 as the Cowboys’ full-time coach. He was 5-3 in 2010 after taking over at midseason following the firing of Wade Phillips.

This is the third straight year Dallas has closed the regular season with a playoffs-or-bust game against a division foe. The Cowboys, who have not been to the playoffs sine 2009, lost to the New York Giants in 2011 and Washington in 2012.

Garrett also expressed confidence in backup QB Kyle Orton, who will start after Romo underwent season-ending back surgery Friday.

“That was a big blow, losing Tony,” Witten said. “Anytime you lose a player like that, that’s just the star of your franchise and the leader of your franchise, it’s difficult. But the show’s got to go on. We believe in Kyle, with the experiences and the success he’s had in this league that he can go and lead our football team. That’s what you hang your hat on is those past experiences.”

Witten ranked Orton’s “demeanor” as one of the things the veteran passer does well. In 69 career NFL starts, Orton is 35-34, but he hasn’t started a game since the 2011 season finale when he was with Kansas City and has thrown just 15 passes since signing with Dallas in 2012.

“He’s had success in this league, had starts,” Witten said. “He’s got an unbelievable confidence in himself and the people around him. I think he understands what winning football is and, playing the position of quarterback, what he has to do; just facilitate and allow his guys to make plays and help us win this game.”
