ARLINGTON – Safety Darren Woodson finished his 12-year career with the Dallas Cowboys as the franchise’s career tackles leader.
He won three Super Bowls and ranks 11th on the club’s career interception chart with 23 picks. He made five trips to the Pro Bowl and was named All-Pro three times.
So what does he have to do to get into the Ring of Honor?
“I don’t know,” said Woodson, who retired after the 2003 season. “Beg somebody. Beg and plead.”
The odds of Woodson going in this season are long after owner Jerry Jones – the one-man ROH committee – said at training camp he has no plans to add anyone to the exclusive club this season.
“I can and I have thought about it this early, but it’s not necessary to think about,” Jones told reporters in Oxnard, Cali. “We’ve had inductees in the Ring of Honor when we didn’t address it until after the season started, and we’ve had them when we thought about it the year before. It’s gone both ways. But at this point we don’t have (one) set.”
Speaking at the Cowboys’ kickoff luncheon Wednesday, Woodson said he’ll leave the decision to Jones but would like to be inducted into the ROH sooner rather than later.
“Hey, that’s on Jerry and those guys,” Woodson said. “I’d love to be in it. I don’t want to be on crutches and my son pushing me on stage to get up there. That’s on Jerry and those guys. I can’t control it.”
The most recent inductees were Larry Allen, Charles Haley and Drew Pearson on Nov. 6, 2011. Allen entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this month.
