Each year there are usually 1-2 good safeties that come off the board in the 25-40 range. This year we have Downs a surefire blue chip prospect and a good group behind him that should go in that normal range. Pick 20 is too rich for anyone not named Downs, where a trade back makes a ton of sense to land a quality safety prospect. The position is one of the best that translates from the college to pro games, meaning plug and play starters.

Downs

Thiemann, Ramsey, Haulcey, Scott, McNeil-Warren

Keep an eye on Jalen Kilgore. He might wind up the 2nd in the class

Very good class but unfortunately we dont have a 2nd or 3rd which is where a lot if these guys will go.

I love Thieneman and he is my clear cut S2. Would not be surprised if he sneaks into the 1st.

Look at this way, safety is a huge need for this team. If they can fill the need, why not find a way to target one of these prospects. Of coarse, it will depend on who is on the board and if a trade back scenario occurs when we are on the clock.

The only guy I've watched so far is Downs. I like him at #12, but I don't think he's a top five player in the class like he is being mocked. No doubt he is smart, and he looks special when he's coming downhill. When he's attacking a gap, you can't convince him that he's not Arvell Reese.

The problem I have is that he gets beat in man coverage, so he can't really be that Kyle Hamilton, Brian Branch type slot player. And he doesn't take good angles in pursuit, so I don't Top 5 love him as a deep safety.

I actually like him the most as a micro LB. He'll draw endless comps to Hamilton this spring, but I think he's really a Budda Baker.

I don't want to crap on Downs too much, because I still have no doubt that he'll become an impact NFL safety. If you look at other high-end Pro Bowl safeties, like say Budda Baker, or Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Xavier McKinney, you would take those guys at #12 in a redraft. You probably wouldn't take them top five though. The only safety you probably would take that high is Hamilton.

only the very best FS's do not get beat against #1 WRs and even they cannot go man on man with the best. That is what the top CBs can do
you are confusing the positions. Even Woody got taken to the woodshed against the very best WRs one on one
A FS is a guy that backs up against the best WRs and can take on the lesser ones.
Downs is a prospect that makes plays; and in the end that is our greatest need in the Safety Room

You'll get Reed Blankenship as a Free Agent.

New coordinators like to bring in some of their guys to help teach the other players.

Such was the case of Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, or so I was told at the Shrine Bowl.

Toledo had three defensive backs scheduled to participate in the Shrine Bowl (2) and Senior Bowl (1). The conversation in Frisco with people from the Toledo program eventually turned to safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, projected by some as a top 45 selection.

People from Toledo told me point blank McNeil-Warren pulled out of the Senior Bowl because he was concerned about his lack of speed, which would be exposed during drills. Entering the season, scouts estimated his forty time to be 4.55 seconds. Keep this in mind when the defensive backs work out at the Combine on Friday, February 27.

Big fan of him as well, if we moved back into that late 1st rd range, I would consider him.
And you add a pick which is really nice when you have no second rnd pick. I will be shocked if we don’t trade back with one of our picks.

Not going to be easy to trade back this year with many players closely bunched together, maybe at 12.

Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is going to be a stud. He has the versatile skill set you look for in a modern S with the ability to play deep zone, cover TE’s, and be a factor in the run game.

some of the draft sites are not sure about that. Mixed bag from what I have seen
