Last season the Safety position was a total disaster. Many blown coverages that lead to huge passing plays down the field. Donovan Wilson a box safety was used more as a roof safety that struggled badly in coverage. Malik Hooker missed a chuck of time due to a toe injury, before that he was never around the football. Bell/Thomas were given every opportunity to seize the job, but both showed why they were undrafted fa's with their poor play.

Cowboys went out and signed the best safety on the market in Jalen Thompson. A versatile safety who is know for his coverage abilities. They added Caleb Downs in the draft who was the best safety in the class. Another versatile chess piece who can play multiple roles. PJ Locke was also signed as a depth piece, who has starting experience in a good unit with Denver. They retained Hooker as they convinced him to take a paycut. Hooker now is more of the team's #3 safety.

CP's scheme is about playing shell coverage with post snap disguise, they needed to add versatile safeties and they did just that. Days of those blown coverages are most likely over, but coverage still is dependent on the pass rush in front of them!

DT and S , They were having problems in the past getting those positions straight and I think they have them straight..

LB/OLB Those are the ones we're going to watch closer..

There is a reason I said to replace the entire Safety position this off season. I'm ok keeping Hooker....for now. If he doesn't make plays fairly consistently this year he needs to go.
He’s a FA next year so that will be his end

certainly improved safety even before getting the best safety in the draft. Now it’s actually a position of strength.

Agreed. I think the safety's recorded all of two interceptions last season. I see a lot more than that this season with the versatile chess pieces that CP has to work with. I'm excited to see how it all plays out.

Paired with pure trash at cornerback. This should be interesting. We've seen Dallas with above average cornerbacks and terrible safeties for years. Now it is the other way around.

The ONE thing I wanted to do, even if nothing else, was remake that position.

I did not think they valued it at all (due to having been forced to watch the likes of Jeff Heath and Alan Ball over the years) and would try to squeeze another season out of the Hooker/Wilson combo on the cheap.

They then proceeded to sign my top free agent and drafted my favorite player, who just happens to be the best player of all time. A lot has been forgiven on my end.

Possibly. But the linebacker room was also significantly upgraded. The linebackers were incredibly ineffective last year.
Not worried about losing Murray though? He was a cornerstone player starting 16 of 17 games. Without him on the field we gave up 34 points to the Giants which was tied for the 5th highest point total of 2025. Surprising no one has signed him yet, but he must be holding out for more money.

So far, all well said comments.... I (too) thought the Joneses didn't value the Safety position but things are looking on the up and up.

I am looking forward to complimentary football on the defensive side of the ball. Each group making the other one better, by simply doing their job.

Injecting an elite collage player into a sub average unit helps. They also raised the floor by replacing certain players with better talent.
