When I initially started my campaign citing a dire need for a Safety and hoping that are first pick is used to shore up that area, I thought I might be alone in that sentiment, considering our defensive line and back up QB situation. Suprisingly, though, from what I've seen, most agree. The Safety I felt could fall to the 2nd round was LSU's Curtis Taylor (6-3 210lb's). However, according to the below chart which breaks down all the Safety's that could be available, the projected round he will be drafted is in the 6th (http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/draft2009S.php). That having been said, perhaps I over-estimated him, or I might know something the expert's don't and he could be a draft day steal. Either way, look at the board below and tell me who would be better pick that will likely fall to the 2nd round. Let's not get crazy with it and bring in hypothetical scenarios where the Cowboys trade up.
  1. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Missouri_logo.gif William Moore, FS/SS, Missouri
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 227.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Projected Round (2009): Top 20 Pick.

1/14/09: William Moore finished the season with 86 tackles, 6.5 TFL, six passes broken up and a pick-six.

12/14/08: William Moore compiled 83 tackles, 5.5 TFL and five passes broken up as a senior. An All-Big XII first-teamer, Moore has a shot to land in the top 15.

5/19/08: Looks to be a good fit at either safety position at the next level. William Moore had an incredible 2007 campaign, notching seven picks and qualifying as a second-team All-American.

2007: An interception machine and the leader of Missouri's defense. Voted as a Second-Team All-American.
  2. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Oregon_logo.gif Patrick Chung, SS, Oregon
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
    Projected Round (2009): 2.

12/14/08: Became an All-Pac 10 first-teamer, thanks to 82 tackles, 6.5 TFL, six passes broken up and a pick-six. If Patrick Chung runs a low 4.4, he could find himself in the first round.

2007: A tough tackler with speed and versatility, Patrick Chung has decided to stay for his senior season after declaring for the 2008 NFL Draft.

Chung just doesn't miss football games; going into the Arizona State contest, he's making his 34th straight start. He had four picks and two sacks as a sophomore.

  3. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Alabama_logo.gif Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 189.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
    Projected Round (2009): 2.

1/14/09: Voted to the AP All-America Second Team, Rashad Johnson was called "one of the smartest players I've ever coached" by Nick Saban.

12/14/08: Easily an All-SEC first-teamer, Rashad Johnson totaled 82 tackles, five TFL, 11 passes broken up and five picks, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Johnson's 40 is good enough to excite Al Davis.

5/19/08: A member of the first team All-SEC, Rashad Johnson had 94 tackles 5.5 tackles for loss and eight pass breakups.

2007: Made his first start against Hawaii last year and hasn't looked back. Rashad Johnson has become an important part of Alabama's secondary. He can help in the return game at the next level.
  4. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Utah_logo.gif Sean Smith, S/CB, Utah
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 214.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
    Projected Round (2009): 2.

1/14/09: Sean Smith, probably more of a safety than a corner at the next level, registered 45 tackles, nine passes broken up, two TFL, five interceptions and a pick-six for national champion Utah. He has declared for the 2009 NFL Draft.

12/13/08: Sean Smith has been a beast this season, and no one can blame him if he declares a year early. An All-Mountain West first-teamer, Smith collected 40 tackles, five picks (one touchdown) and eight passes broken up. Could play corner or safety in the NFL.
  5. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/WesternMichigan_logo.gif Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan
    Height: 5-11. Weight: 196.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
    Projected Round (2009): 2-3.

12/14/08: A monstrous senior season has vaulted Louis Delmas into the upper echelon of this list. Delmas had 100 tackles, four TFL, three passes broken up, four interceptions and a pick-six as a senior.

5/19/08: Louis Delmas is a bit small, but he's a good hitter who had 64 tackles in 2007. He has eight career picks.

2007: Was a starter from Day 1 with Western Michigan. A fierce hitter who has a knack for making interceptions.
  6. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/MississippiState_logo.gif Derek Pegues, FS, Mississippi State
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 194.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
    Projected Round (2009): 2-3.

12/14/08: A member of the All-SEC Second Team, Derek Pegues collected 50 tackles, six passes broken up and two picks.

5/19/08: Doubling as a return man, Derek Pegues managed 50 tackles and five interceptions in 2007.

2007: Derek Pegues is a lightning-quick jack of all trades; he can play cornerback, free safety and kick returner. He started every game as a sophomore and picked off four passes.

  7. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/SouthCarolina_logo.gif Emanuel Cook, SS/FS, South Carolina
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 203.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
    Projected Round (2009): 3.

1/14/09: Emanuel Cook was academically ineligible for the team's winter practice game, and consequently couldn't play in the TGIFriday's Bowl.

12/14/08: An All-SEC second-teamer, Emanuel Cook finished his junior campaign with 87 tackles.

5/19/08: Emmanuel Cook's height may hurt his draft stock, but his dynamic play makes up for it. Despite missing two contests in 2007, Cook recorded 92 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks.
  8. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Oklahoma_logo.gif Nic Harris, SS, Oklahoma
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 225.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
    Projected Round (2009): 3.

1/14/09: An AP All-America third-teamer, Nic Harris could be targeted in the third round by the Patriots. He seems like the sort of strong safety-linebacker tweener that they like.

12/14/08: A linebacker-safety tweener, but then again, so was Wesley Woodyard, and I think he's working out just fine. Harris had 64 tackles and six passes broken up this season.

5/19/08: Nic Harris had 74 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions. His 40 time will hurt him if he runs in the mid-4.6s.

2007: Nic Harris, a key component of Oklahoma's secondary, is exceptional at locking down against the run. He started eight games as a sophomore, registering three sacks and four picks.
  9. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Clemson_logo.gif Michael Hamlin, SS, Clemson
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 205.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
    Projected Round (2009): 3.

12/14/08: Say what you want about Michael Hamlin, but he has the numbers: 91 tackles, seven passes broken up and six interceptions. Made the All-ACC First Team.

5/19/08: A four-year starter for Clemson, Michael Hamlin has 12 turnovers in his career thus far.

2007: Hampered by an ankle injury throughout the 2006 season, Michael Hamlin still managed to make 65 tackles and two interceptions.
  10. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/TroyState_logo.gif Sherrod Martin, FS, Troy State
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 188.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
    Projected Round (2009): 4.

12/14/08: An All-Sun Belt first-teamer Sherrod Martin impressed with 80 tackles, four picks and six passes broken up.

5/19/08: Despite missing a third of the season with shoulder injuries, Sherrod Martin recorded 52 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
  11. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/WakeForest_logo.gif Chip Vaughn, SS, Wake Forest
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 215.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
    Projected Round (2009): 4-5.

12/14/08: Chip Vaughn had 79 tackles, two picks and six passes broken up as a senior.

5/19/08: In his first full season as a starter, Chip Vaughn finished with 100 tackles and an amazing 14 pass breakups.

2007: Blocked a field goal against Florida State last year, arguably the most important play of the year. This season is his first as a full-time starter.

  12. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/USC_logo.gif Kevin Ellison, SS, USC
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 225.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
    Projected Round (2009): 5.

1/14/09: Oddly enough, Kevin Ellison has been excluded from the Senior Bowl. He'll have to shine at the Combine.

12/14/08: Despite missing a third of the season with knee injuries, Kevin Ellison was placed on the All-Pac 10 team. Ellison notched 43 tackles and seven passes broken up.

5/19/08: Despite having knee surgery prior to the 2007 season, Kevin Ellison played in every game and recorded 54 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and two picks.

2007: Kevin Ellison started every game as a sophomore for USC, notching 64 tackles and a pick.
  13. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/MichiganState_logo.gif Otis Wiley, SS, Michigan State
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
    Projected Round (2009): 5.

12/14/08: Otis Wiley rebounded from a mediocre junior campaign with a brilliant senior season. Wiley, a member of the All-Big Ten First Team, compiled 71 tackles, seven passes broken up and four picks, one of which was returned for a score.

2007: Otis Wiley was benched in the Northwestern game.

Wiley registered an interception and made a few key plays against Pittsburgh. He always seemed to be at the right place at the right time.

Led all Spartans with 94 tackles in 2006. Broke up 10 passes but couldn't manage to secure an interception.
  14. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Rutgers_logo.gif Courtney Greene, SS/FS, Rutgers
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 215.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
    Projected Round (2009): 5-6.

12/14/08: Despite somewhat struggling this season, Courtney Greene managed to qualify for the All-Big East First Team. Greene collected 83 tackles and two passes broken up.

5/19/08: Courtney Greene, who can play either safety position, had 91 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

2007: Led all freshmen in tackles a few years ago. Registered three interceptions in 2006. Definitely a big reason for Rutgers' resurgence.
  15. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/NotreDame_logo.gif David Bruton, FS, Notre Dame
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 212.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
    Projected Round (2009): 5-6.

1/14/09: David Bruton, a two-year starter, was invited to the Senior Bowl.

12/14/08: One of the few productive players on Notre Dame this season, David Bruton managed 93 tackles, six passes broken up and three picks.

5/19/08: A team captain going into the 2008 season, David Bruton recorded 85 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions.
  16. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Cincinnati_logo.gif Brandon Underwood, FS, Cincinnati
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 190.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
    Projected Round (2009): 6.

12/14/08: Part of a talented secondary and the All-Big East First Team, Brandon Underwood compiled 60 tackles, six passes broken up, 3.5 TFL, three interceptions and a pick-six.
  17. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/LSU_logo.gif Curtis Taylor, FS, LSU
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
    Projected Round (2009): 6.

12/14/08: Doing a decent job in replacing LaRon Landry, Curtis Taylor accumulated 41 tackles and two picks as a senior. A mid-round prospect.

5/19/08: As a substitute for LaRon Landry, Curtis Taylor collected 49 tackles, two interceptions and a sack. I'd like to see him drop his 40.
  18. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Marshall_logo.gif C.J. Spillman, FS, Marshall
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 194.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.46.
    Projected Round (2009): 6.

12/14/08: C.J. Spillman managed 71 tackles and four passes broken up as a senior. He regressed a bit this season.

5/19/08: C.J. Spillman finished his 2007 campaign with 131 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles.

2007: One of the leaders on a miserable 2007 Marshall squad.
  19. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/NorthCarolina_logo.gif Trimane Goddard, FS, North Carolina
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 195.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
    Projected Round (2009): 6-7.

12/14/08: A second-team All-American, Trimane Goddard managed to pick off seven passes and break up five more. One of the interceptions was a pick-six. Unfortunately, Trimane Goddard's combine numbers will hurt his stock.

2007: Became a starter the second half of his sophomore year, in which he picked off three passes. He red-shirted the following year in the wake of a broken foot.
  20. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/ArizonaState_logo.gif Troy Nolan, SS/FS, Arizona State
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 204.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
    Projected Round (2009): 6-7.

12/14/08: Troy Nolan registered 64 tackles, six passes broken up, four interceptions and two pick-sixes as a senior. Not bad. Nolan's efforts earned him a spot on the All-Pac 10 Second Team.

5/19/08: Troy Nolan finished the 2007 season with six picks. He also had 64 tackles and seven pass breakups. He's best at strong safety, but can play either safety position.

2007: I'd like to see Troy Nolan either add more mass or drop his 40. He has five picks going into the Oregon game.
  21. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/TCU_logo.gif Stephen Hodge, SS, TCU
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 212.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
    Projected Round (2009): 6-7.

1/14/09: Stephen Hodge, who was just invited to the Combine, finished his senior year with 81 tackles, 10 TFL, three sacks and three passes broken up.
  22. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/TexasTech_logo.gif Darcel McBath, FS, Texas Tech
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 198.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
    Projected Round (2009): 6-7.

12/14/08: Easily a member of the All-Big XII First Team, Darcel McBath recorded 70 tackles, seven passes broken up, six interceptions and a pick-six as a senior.

5/19/08: As a senior, Darcel McBath is entering his third season as a starter. He's recorded 148 tackles, five picks and 11 pass break-ups in his sophomore and junior campaigns. An honorable mention on the All-Big XII team.

  23. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Clemson_logo.gif Chris Clemons, SS, Clemson
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
    Projected Round (2009): 7.

12/14/08: The Eagles should draft this guy so they can have two Chris Clemonses and confuse the heck out of everyone. This Clemons tallied 72 tackles, 2.5 TFL, three passes broken up and a pick-six.

2007: "Clemson's Chris Clemons." Try saying that 10 times in a row. One of the top tacklers in the ACC, Chris Clemons had an outstanding sophomore campaign in 2006, registering 102 tackles, good for second most on the team.
  24. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Oklahoma_logo.gif Lendy Holmes, FS, Oklahoma
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 201.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
    Projected Round (2009): 7.

12/14/08: With 79 tackles, five picks and four passes broken up, Lendy Holmes was able to secure a spot on the All-Big XII Second Team.

5/17/08: Lendy Holmes missed the Fiesta Bowl because he was academically ineligible.

2007: You have to love a tall corner with mid-4.4 speed, but Lendy Holmes was responsible for two long Tulsa touchdowns in September 2007.
  25. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/OregonState_logo.gif Al Afalava, SS, Oregon State
    Height: 5-11. Weight: 215.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
    Projected Round (2009): 7.

12/14/08: Al Afalava finished the year with 34 tackles, seven passes broken up, two interceptions and a pick-six.

5/19/08: Alfalfa? What were his parents thinking? More importantly, what was Alfalfa thinking when he was arrested for a DUI in February?
  26. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/TroyState_logo.gif Terence Moore, SS, Troy State
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 216.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
    Projected Round (2009): 7-FA.

12/14/08: An All-Sun Belt first-teamer, Terence Moore had 67 tackles, 5.5 TFL, six picks and three passes broken up. Unfortunately, he's a tweener who doesn't have great combine numbers.

5/19/08: A first-year starter in 2007, Terence Moore had 63 tackles and four pass break-ups.
  27. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Vanderbilt_logo.gif Reshard Langford, SS, Vanderbilt
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 212.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
    Projected Round (2009): 7-FA.

12/14/08: Sort of a safety-linebacker tweener, Reshard Langford accumulated 67 tackles and three picks (one touchdown) this year.

2007: Reshard Langford, who started as a freshman in Vanderbilt, probably needs to drop his 40 time a bit. He had six picks going into the 2007 season.
  28. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Stillman_logo.gif Dre'Mail Hardin, FS, Stillman
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 196.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.57.
    Projected Round (2009): 7-FA.

5/19/08: A transfer from Mississippi State. Had 54 tackles, 4.5 TFL, six pass breakups and an amazing nine picks in 2007.
  29. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Mississippi_logo.gif Jamarca Sanford, SS, Ole Miss
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 200.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
    Projected Round (2009): 7-FA.

12/14/08: Had 80 tackles and four TFL as a senior.

5/19/08: Jamarca Sanford should be able to catch on as a solid special teams player in the NFL.
  30. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/MississippiState_logo.gif Keith Fitzhugh, SS/FS, Mississippi State
    Height: 5-11. Weight: 205.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

12/14/08: Tough; Keith Fitzhugh played through a concussion. He finished the season with 50 tackles, 2.5 TFL and two picks.

5/19/08: Started just four games as a junior, but managed 58 tackles, two picks and three pass break-ups.
  31. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/CentralFlorida_logo.gif Jason Venson, FS, Central Florida
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 208.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
    Projected Round (2009): 7-FA.

12/14/08: A weak 40 will hurt Jason Venson, who had 82 tackles, eight passes broken and 3.5 TFL.

5/19/08: Jason Venson finished with 81 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and two picks.

2007: A solid collegiate player who may not transition well to the NFL. Jason Venson started 16 games in his first two seasons at Central Florida. He led his team with 10 tackles in a near upset over Texas.
  32. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Kentucky_logo.gif Marcus McClinton, FS, Kentucky
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 210.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

1/14/09: Marcus McClinton notched four interceptions in 2008. It's too bad he has off-the-field issues.

5/19/08: Missed a bunch of time in 2007 with multiple injuries. Marcus McClinton has yet to blowed anyone up, as far as I know.

2007: Calling Marcus McClinton explosive is an understatement; last summer, McClinton was charged with making explosives from household products. But look on the bright side - if he can't play safety in the NFL, you can always hire him to blow the opposing quarterback up. And that way, Emmitt can say, "That quarterback got blowed up!"
  33. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Arizona_logo.gif Nate Ness, FS, Arizona
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 191.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

12/14/08: Not so much the interception machine anymore, Nate Ness picked off two passes as a senior, returning one for a touchdown. He also broke up seven passes.

5/19/08: An interception machine - Nate Ness had 19 interceptions, 10 of which were returned for touchdowns in junior college. He picked off five passes in his first six games with Arizona.

2007: Nate Ness, a safety who has three interceptions through nine weeks in 2007, returned 10 interceptions for touchdowns in junior college. He needs to drop into the 4.4s to be considered a first-day selection.
  34. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/UAB_logo.gif Will Dunbar, FS, UAB
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 195.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

12/14/08: Will Dunbar finished his senior campaign with 68 tackles, 2.5 TFL, five passes broken up and two picks.

5/19/08: Will Dunbar, one of the few solid players on a miserable 2-10 team, managed a mind-boggling 122 tackles in 2007.
  35. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/USC_logo.gif Josh Pinkard, FS, USC
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 215.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

12/14/08: Josh Pinkard finally played a whole season, recording 37 tackles and three passes broken up. He's likely to go undrafted, given his medical and legal history. He really needs a strong combine.

5/19/08: I'd like to see Josh Pinkard catch a break. He's missed most of the past two seasons. He's a dynamic talent but just can't get on the field.

2007: Josh Pinkard is out for the year with a torn ACL. He may get a medical redshirt.

Pinkard was arrested in May on DUI charges. He wasn't convicted yet, but the news will likely bring down his draft stock.

Had season-ending knee surgery in September, so it remains to be seen if Josh Pinkard can still run that 4.44. If he can, he's the top-rated free safety eligible for the 2008 Draft. Can also play corner.
  36. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/PennState_logo.gif Tony Davis, FS, Penn State
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 197.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

12/14/08: Finished the year with 38 tackles and five passes broken up. An All-Big Ten honorable mention.

2007: Tony Davis is a quick defensive back who can play either cornerback or safety. Unfortunately, he is out for the 2007 season with appendicitis.
  37. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Miami_logo.gif Anthony Reddick, FS, Miami
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 205.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

1/14/09: Declaring a year early, Anthony Reddick had 67 tackles and three passes broken up in 2008.

    12/14/08: An All-ACC honorable mention.

2007: What a shame: Tore his ACL and will miss the 2007 season. This is the second time in his collegiate career that Anthony Reddick will be out for an entire campaign (2005).
  38. http://www.BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/college/Miami_logo.gif Randy Phillips, FS, Miami
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 202.
    Projected Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
    Projected Round (2009): FA.

12/14/08: Played in only two games because of knee surgery.

2007: Though he was in the starting lineup eight times as a sophomore, Randy Phillips lost his job after getting burnt to a crisp against Oklahoma.
  39. Eric Thatcher, FS, Pittsburgh -
    Height: 5-9. Weight: 195. Projected 40 Time: 4.48. Projected Round (2009): FA.
  40. Mesphin Forrester, SS, Washington -
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 205. Projected 40 Time: 4.54. Projected Round (2009): FA.
  41. Mike Pagnotta, SS, Colorado State -
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 205. Projected 40 Time: 4.58. Projected Round (2009): FA.
  42. C.J. Byrd, FS, Byrd -
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 193. Projected 40 Time: 4.53. Projected Round (2009): FA.

William Moore will be long gone by the time we pick but I could live with players 2 thru 6.

All I know is that we need a ball Hawk, We need a great coverage safety that can make QBs fearful of throwing deep, then RW (safety) would shine once more.

Roy Williams was great because we had Woodson in coverage, if we can get a FS with similar skills we'd be set.

No secret I like the Johnson kid from Alabama and hope he is on our radar, Chung is a good player but I barely remember him playing in the games I watched. I feel like Johnson brings some more Taschard attitude to the locker room which is an asset in my draft lexicon this year. I am hoping we keep TO as his departure really turns the draft in a different direction. If that happens we better bring someone else in who can evaluate O Lineman as it is obvious that person in not around at this time. Woodson type players would be a god send, we can always hope. Go Cowboys

We have a 'Safety situation'.

We don't have a 'Quarterback situation'.

Get a Safety who shows up on game day with a few dynamic plays that cause turnovers.

Johnson would need to put on some weight to compete in the NFL. We need a player who can bulk up in a limited amount of time, which may take Johnson 1 to 2 years. Furthermore, I'm leaning more towards a replacement for Roy Williams, as I think he will probably be cut in the near future. Curtis Taylor has the frame to bulk up in a short amount of time and has good size. I also think he's much faster than the predicted 40 times. Will have a better idea after columbine of who will be ideal.

Safety may be the biggest hole on defense. I wouldn't count on a rookie working out back there though. Cook and Hamlin should be available. Hamlin looks like the pro and Cook plays like one. Those are the only two I have actually seen play and know about.

I'd rather get a vet in here that can actually play. Unless Hamlin was injured then I'm not happy with his play.

thanks to the damn kids in your sig. now we're probably gonna go another year with a crappy S core unless Hamlin returns to 2007 form.

Michael Hamlin or Chip Vaughn get my vote . Really like both these kids at the SS position . I don't belive there will be a spot open at FS with Hamlin , Watkins , and Henry in the mix .

I agree, finding a player in the draft that can play on the same level as the top Safety's in the league, might be asking a little much, particularly if pulled out of the second round or later. But what Free Agent coming available can boast that? The main need we need in this position is consistency. I've never been a fan of the situational defense, because it's shows the opposing offense your hand (e.g. Roy Williams - expecting run/Pat Watkins or Courtney Brown - expecting pass). We need a player who can play throughout the game, who might not be great at both stopping the run and defending the pass, but, at least, is not considered a liability in either facet of the position. Since Curtis Taylor was a WR/QB in high school whose size warranted the switch to Safety, I think he might have a better feel for what the Cowboys are needing.

I would also like to see Kevin Burnett move into Zach Thomas' position, if Zach leaves. Kevin may not be a great run stopper, like Zach or Brady, but he has proven his worth in coverage. With Spencer and Ware playing pass rush specialist and Brady as a run stopper, it would be nice to have some insurance on the field who can shadow the check down TE/RB/FB, if necessary. Zach has limitations in both size and speed, so while he is a sure tackle, Burnett has a better chance of closing the gap and defending the pass.

Moore is the best S, easily, but Dallas won't even come w/in sniffing difference.

If Dallas goes S with their 1st pick (2nd rounder), then I like Pat Chung. The guy can play either S spot, is physical, fast and heady.

Otherwise, Dallas can wait until the 4th - 6th rounds and grab some guys with good upside (this is a deep draft for S) like Wake Forest's Vaughn, Rutgers' Greene or ND's Bruton. All bigger guys w/speed who would most likely be better at SS.

My darkhorses are FS's Darcel McBath and USC's Josh Pinkard. Crazy athletes who will be better pros. Both these guys will be late day 2 picks (maybe even undrafted_due to injuries/inexperience or just playing on bad Ds).

I would much rather get a proven young player, like an OJ Atogwe in here, while we let RW go. Last year Madeu Williams signed a huge contract with the Vikings..and most people had never heard of him. So I dont know what the market is for a young FA safety.

Pinkard, like Mays, is coming back to USC for one more year. He was awarded a 6th year of eligibility. He filled in at CB this past season but it looks like USC Coach Carroll has said he will get to play FS next year with Mays moving to SS.
