Saints are signing Jameis Winston

JAMEIS WINSTONQB, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson reports the Saints are finalizing a one-year deal with free agent QB Jameis Winston.
No details have been released just yet, but the deal is supposed to be "economical" since the Saints have roughly $3.5 million in cap space available. Winston also won't be guaranteed the backup role behind Drew Brees, instead competing with Taysom Hill, who was retained this offseason with a first-round tender, while also giving the team another viable arm in the event Hill gets injured in his atypical sub-package roles. Taysom has been widely viewed as the heir apparent once Brees reportedly walks away for an analyst job with NBC Sports next offseason, but Winston could very well maneuver his way into the organization's long-term plans with a little bit of luck and successful showing. It's not what the 26-year-old had in mind after throwing for the eighth-most passing yards (5,109) in a single-season in league history last year, but there's a lot to like for both parties in this agreement if the numbers can be agreed upon.

I was hoping we could sign him as our backup. We need to address the backup quarterback position.

Saints shoulda be able to parlay this into a third or fourth round compensatory pick ones he leaves next season.

Good move by the Saints, they are in win now mode. Also proves that Hill isn't good enough to be their backup QB, better served in that jack of all trades role.

Brees didn’t turn the ball over enough apparently....

He’s just backup insurance for this year. No way they’re thinking of him as Bree’s replacement for the future.

I think that is good for both Winston and the saints. brees has shown some cracks the last two years. He won’t get benched there but there is a good chance Winston will be needed at some point.

for Winston it is a reset year. Eat a little humble pie and just work to get better. He can either be a long term option for the saints or moves on after taking a step back behind Brees. If he gets a chance to play and plays well he can reset the narrative and a team may feel much better as him being their Qb1. He is still young. You can’t have the careless play he has shown as your qb1 in today’s nfl.

What makes you think he will get a huge contract next season if he couldn’t this year?

unless he gets to play like Bridgewater did.

He throws too many INTS.

but he throws for a lot of yards and TDS.

he needs to be around a good system.

It’s perfect for him.

Arian called a few teams trying to help him find a job. From everything, I've read/heard Winston has actually grown a bunch from his rookie year up to now but simply can't shake the interception issues. But to spend a year with Brees and Payton is the best he could hope.

He's merely a filler to get them by if Brees misses some time during the season. Smart move. Just like Bridgewater.
