Saints | Might use Victor Butler as OLB
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 19:17:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, free-agent LB Victor Butler (Cowboys) is still unsigned after a meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, March 15. According to a source, the New Orleans Saints would be a top target for Butler if he left the meeting with the Steelers without a deal. The team is looking for an outside linebacker in their new 3-4 defensive scheme, and Butler played under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan last season with the Dallas Cowboys.

It doesn't matter where Butler plays but he definitely needs to improve his run support on the edge.

The dude is an average pass rusher and a speed bump against the run.

Odd question here. Wasn't Butler an OLB here as well? He backed up Ware. He would have been an OLB if Pitt signed him as well. The story is that the Saints are taking a look at him and that Rob Ryan know him. Why would the aspect that he MIGHT be an OLB an issue at all? What else would he be?

Just trying for a logical explanation for the focus on him being an OLB. Did this guy also write that Ed Reed might try to play Safety in Houston?

My guess is that he will never will. He was here for 4 years and didn't figure it out so I suspect he isn't going to figure it out now.

As far as his run support issues he can't hold the edge to force the ball carrier back inside. It's the same problem that Adrian Hamilton had in the preseason when the ball carrier goes to the outside, he allows himself to get sealed away from the play.

Butler flashed at times as a pass rusher, but one dimensioanl guys are littered all over the NFL. Despite Bruce Irvin's buzz as a rookie pass rusher, his run defense is awful. He was a situational player to begin with, but when he had to start in the ATL divisional playoff game he got thrashed around in the running game.

He also played the SOLB role in the 4-3 looks that Ryan used. Butler played DE in college so I'm guessing the writer is just trying to clearly identify that 3-4 teams interested in him are looking at him as an OLB only.

Butler backed up both Ware and Spencer.

He's undersized for the SOLB spot in the 3-4, but I do think he has potential as a weak side rusher.

These size memes should be thrown out the window.

Spencer has been listed at 250 lbs and Butler at 245 lbs. I doubt either one of them are those weights but Spencer never had issues with being physical holding the edge.

You're right. Anthony Spencer and Victor Butler are the same person with the same builds, Butler is clearly just weaker willed.

Do you feel better?

Why even waste your time with a response like this?
