I really wish the NFL would adopt a Bird Rights type of rule. Any player drafted by a team can re-sign with same team and the team gets a 20 percent (or something like that) cap relief on said players.

Say you sign a draft pick on second contract at 10 million then only 8 million counts towards the cap. 50 million second contract QB who team drafted only counts $40 million towards the cap. It would create a system that rewards good drafting teams. After signing second contract or a Franchise Tag then that player is excluded from this rule for future contracts. Non-drafted players do not count.

You could even include a stipulation that any player who exercises their "Bird Rights" has a fully guaranteed contract up to the amount of money they are on cap relief. Example, Player signs a 50 million contract with bird rights of 40 million counted towards the cap. 40 million is guaranteed not the 50 million.

This would be beneficial for the owners because it rewards teams trying to build or create a team that is drafted and built right. While also giving players a option to continue with the same team for a 20% increase in salary compared to what another team offers. I am a WR getting a 20 million a year contract from Team B but the team I was drafted to can offer 24 million a year and the salary cap only counts 20 million towards the team.

I like where you’re going with this. I wish they could put a system in place that if you draft a player he only counts 50% of his salary to the salary cap.

I feel there has to be a reward for drafting well. It seems if you draft well you shouldn’t be able to keep your players at a discount since you drafted a developed him. So take Osa for instance. We draft him, develop him and then have to make a decision to overpay or allow another team to benefit from our development of the guy. Osa gets his market value and it only costs us 10.5 million instead of 21 million.

Or don’t allow QBs that you drafted, Ala Dak, to count against the cap. Something that rewards teams that draft well. Anyway, just 4:30 AM rambling cuz I can’t sleep.

Hey, I was at a rock throwing contest when it suddenly broke into a snow ball fight! Football!!

The NFL President is already crying revenues lost...the Capital is choosing broadcast sanctions.

Flip side of the coin is teams that are unable to assess their own talent properly literally pay the price. E.g., if a team pays a QB elite money as the most expensive player in the league when in reality he's a mid tier top 15 QB then you reep what you sow.

Teams trying to win with their current locker room, for the team and its window, dont think like this.

Your getting overly obsessed with ROI of one player, and not wanting to look a fool...over one contract, even if the largest on the team, that you would risk the whole locker rooms...the players time and some really good players careers...chasing an Andrew Luck type QB.

All over one player/contract. Just because you don't like market rate of around 20% of cap, which is fair for a starting QB.

This contract convo ruined this board. And, bird rights has been brought up a ton of times around here, specifically from me, and no one was really interested. I'm sure since someone else brought it up there will be healthy discussion.

Also...I solved the QB contract issue in a way that was fair to both player and owner...but this board is pro ripping players off and no one wanted to hear it. They just want to complain and shame players into taking less money than they deserve.

Don't even hide behind base line democratic principals at those salary levels. Did you say something about VA rights or medicare while at it? What about watching the sport and supporting a team?

If no one wanted to hear it, have you considered it was just a terrible idea?

How about stop crying over money so much.

It's ruining sports...or, I'm sorry...sports entertainment.

"It's real to me, damn it"

The League should implement a rule that the starting QBs salary gets transferred to the 2nd string or any player who starts or plays more than 50% of the snaps per game. If the QB sucks and is benched, or gets injured, 2nd string comes in and his salary is pro-rated to the games he played.

Every team is paying around the same amount per snap for a QB with this.

It prevents the complaining of this played out topic. 20% is fair for a playing QB. No need to try and play word tricks to derail the convo....new 2nd contract annual average being about 20% of cap for starting QBs.

I get that this board wants controversy for clicks, Ala Jerry Jones.

Base pay on snaps played. It's the owners job to evaluate and find talent to play at market rates. Not complain about fair Market rate and his bad ROI because he sucks at evaluation. It's typical owner stuff...placing blame on others and not themselves.

This problem is easy to solve, but they don't want it to be solved.

I'll watch for highlights

If Bird rights could be extended to any player drafted by the team, savvy GM's would be the new dynasty makers. If Bird rights follow players that are traded by the team that drafted them--as they do in the NBA--then that savvy GM could rule the NFL.

For example, take a look at the Eagles. Four of their five o-linemen were drafted by the team. They could simply cap out at the other positions and still resign their linemen at any price. The odd man out would be Becton. But, let's say Roseman knows the Jets would release Becton. Roseman could have called the Jets and offered them a 6th or 7th round pick for the player. The Jets, seeing that could get at least something for a bust player, agree to the trade. Since Becton was drafted by the Jets, Becton's Bird rights transfer to the Eagles. Now the Eagles could sign their entire starting o-line and go over the cap doing so. Same with Hurts, Goedart, and Smith--and AJ Brown. His Bird rights would have transferred from Tennessee.

The Eagles could do the same with their defense. Mitchell, DeJean, Carter, Davis, Smith, Dean, Blankenship, and Sweat could be resigned with only the owner's pocketbook putting any limits on signings.

If the NFL adopted Bird rights, there would have to be a limit to how many per team. Of course, if you want teams like KC, San Fran, and Philly to run the NFL, have no limits on Bird rights. Our GM would have us fighting for 3rd place in our division, with only the idiocy of the Giants keeping us out of the basement.

I am okay with such a rule change. But I wonder if some owners, like Jerry, would simply overpay players more knowing they get to cut 20% off the CAP number. I like the idea of rewarding good drafting. After all, the league has made a huge spectacle out of the combine and pro-days, then a major TV production out of the draft itself. Why not add some incentives for teams that do a good job at preparing their rosters.

I mean isn't this the way the NBA is set up I'm no expert but they also allow them to go over the cap to a point that they have to pay a luxury tax ?

the teams again it's the same thing some choose to participate in spending big and free agency and some don't..
so which ones are going to want to pay this luxury tax? They just need to either have a hard cap like they do now or just remove the cap and let's just see how it works for five years just have a contract for five years of no salary cap and let's see what the league does then....

No surprise...i started watching NBA a few years ago...and what do you know...they just implemented strict cap rules. No one wants to enter the apron or the luxury tax because you are prevented from making common trades due to penalties.

It's like the world is using numbers to ruin everything around me.

The NBA is going the route of 'haves vs have nots' now, using strict cap as a way to force really good role players to take less money because "the cap is only allowing us to offer this much or we are heavily penalized"

It's all fake to me....but would love it if Lebron did get that new league off the ground and cut out a lot ot middle men hucksters taking player money. Not that I agree that players should be making 100M per year if they removed owners...but I don't know if buying a team and owning some real estate means you should get equal total revenue as the players, like the current set up

You really want the chiefs to get enormous cap relief from Kelce and Jones and Mahomes so they go out and sign a bunch of free agents?

The problem with the idea is it works both ways. I’d prefer if this didn’t go through because it just additionally punishes teams who have bad draft luck

The reason it works in the nba is because a single player can send you to the playoffs; 2 players can make you a true contender. The NFL is way too different a league

I've said it many times. The way it's setup now the NFL penalizes teams for drafting well. If a team consistently drafts well all those players are going to want to get paid, and there isn't enough cap room to sign them all to lucrative deals. There needs to be a separate cap or even no cap at all for drafted players. Make the cap just for free agents.

Yes, let’s change the rules to accommodate our “GM/s,” who don’t actually do GM work, they just want the credit if it happens to go well.

The NBA started strict cap penalties last year or this year.

They still have a soft cap, but hard penalties...unlike years before.

Golden State Warriors were 150M over the after luxury tax at one point if I am not mistaken.

Now there are trade restriction penalties, not just owner eating tons of money for his team to compete.

Interesting timing for NBA to start a strict cap.

So reward continuity within a team… I actually don’t mind that

well, that may work for a couple of years. ....why? because its going to drive up prices for the players, since teams will focus on managing the cap that way....as cap goes up (which is essentially what you did), prices go up.... i.e. Dak getting 60M AAV (not argument of is he worth it or not, but just price wise where the market is).

and I think the owners won't go for that, because then there is that 20% cap they are paying for.....they put the cap in place to manage spending and portion players get, and so on....so now, owners would pay more....

its not going to fly.
