Yeah, but I think the 3-4 defense is the one we're still better suited for, personnel wise.
As for Seattle? Yeah, they play the 4-3, but that's where the similarities end.
I bring up Seattle because Kiffen before the season began said we'd be playing more press man coverage in our 4-3 like Seattle does as opposed to the current Tampa 2 zone schemes we're using.
We're not getting pressure on the QB due to our d-lines issues this season so that why we're playing a lot of zone. It's hurting Claiborne and Carr who is a solid # 2 zone corner but a better press corner overall.
This is the year the d-line gets a whole remake so switching to the 4-3 fully I feel is necessary. We were better suited for the 3-4 personnel wise originally but again since this d-line will be totally remodelled I don't believe going to a 4-3 over will be a hinderence.
We need to be able to get out of these constant zones in the secondary and the only way to do that is to get pressure on the QB which will help both man and zone. It really comes down to our lack of pressure.
When you say we're more suited personnel for the 3-4 I assume the players most impacted are Ware, Carter, Claiborne and Carr? Spencer and probably Hatcher won't be here next season so I won't account for them.
Ware will stay healthier in the 3-4 and was better there but he's on his last legs and we need to move forward unfortunately.
Carter should be playing Durants position or in the middle. He was a beast in college playing in a 4-3. It's Kiffens 4-3 and that side of the field having him playing below his potential. They want Lee in the middle because he calls the plays but it also maximizes his overall big play potential playing in the middle.
The problem is Lee gets hurt too much playing in the middle. Better having him play always at less his overall playmaking potential than on the sidelines half the year. Carter just simply plays better in the middle as we've seen this year.
Now Claiborne and Carr just need to be able to press and play man. I don't think Ryan's scheme utilized their overall potential any better but he had them playing off too because we weren't getting to the QB.
The 4-3 is not the issue. The issue is we're not getting to the QB and a LB that could be a star is playing out of place. Lee could excell at all LB positions in the 4-3 but would probably stay healthier on the outside. Lance Briggs leads the defense on the field from the outside backer position so Lee could still do that if moved to that side.
It also doesn't help that Eberflus is a 3-4 LB coach albeit a very good one. So he's got a bit of a learning curve himself with the 4-3 which doesn't help Carter. The same goes for our secondary coach.
Our best defensive coach other than theDC is a 4-3 coach. Marinelli, who is also one of the leagues better DCs in the league anyways. That d-line will run a 4 front make no bones about it and the personnel is going to change on the line anyways.
Wilber looks good at LB when Carter goes to the middle. So when Lee is playing Carter either stays in the middle or Durants spot. Lee the same thing.
After this year we will be set up better for the 4-3 than the 3-4 and our HC wanted to change the 3-4 because teams were forcing Ware into coverage as opposed to putting pressure on the QB all the time.
