I've been crunching some numbers and it appears we can free up another $9 to $10 million in cap room if we were to release or trade the following 4 players:

Greg Ellis OLB
Roy Williams SS
Anthony Henry CB
Brad Johnson QB

Henry has another $ 1 M roster bonus due this March. His 2009 Cap Hit is something like $5.6 M. I can't see how he is still on this roster come March. They save $4.6 M in space if they let him go or trade him.

I know this creates dead space on the cap but it completely falls off the next year and it still creates more room than we have now. I know there are some posters who know the cap as well or better than I do. Can you verify my numbers?

sorry can't verify your numbers...but, was reading the other day that we got more cap space from Hannah:

When the Cowboys promoted tight end Rodney Hannah from the practice squad for the final week of the season, they also created $5.7 million in salary-cap space for 2009.

Hannah could have received the $5.7 million had he blocked four punts in the season finale at Philadelphia, but he was not active. By not reaching the incentive that money rolls into the '09 cap.

Some of that money will be eaten up by incentives (like the $1 million Zach Thomas received) but the Cowboys figure to have around $10 million when free agency begins in March.

Another Wade screw up! We could have used those four blocked punts to.

I hope we have a good backup. He can't stay healthy at cb. He sure won't at FS.

Hopefully Jerry will draft a FS and a SS with the 9+ picks he's working with...

He better be good because he'll be playing a lot.

A 32 year old, perpetually injured player isn't the future of JACK!

Cutting those 4 also creates some more holes but I'd be curious to see what we could do with $19 M in cap room and 11 draft picks.

I think we could re-sign Ware and make a run at a Asomugha or a Haynesworth with $19 M in cap space.

The guy is over 30, and cannot tackle. He is fine at safety in packages, but as a base FS?

You remember why we got gashed for 77 and 82 yd TD runs right?

I'd love Haynesworth, but it's not going to happen.

And Asomugha? Thats way too much invested in the secondary. A MLB that with a little speed who can cover (Burnett) and a new safety will help our secondary far more than another CB. Plus the price for Asomugha makes him inattainable.
