Sam Hurd... blazing fast?

Sam Hurd, WR, Cowboys
Hurd is popular, reliable, good in the locker room and blazing-fast. He's also likely on the way out.

At the start of camp, the consensus was that Hurd and Patrick Crayton were battling for the final receiver roster spot. Crayton's had a terrific camp; it's a classic numbers-game type situation. The Cowboys certainly aren't going to release Roy Williams, Miles Austin or top pick Dez Bryant. And young players like Jesse Holley and Kevin Ogletree are up-and-comers -- and cheaper. Once rumors of the Cowboys trying to deal Hurd surfaced last week, it was a sure sign Hurd's days in Dallas are coming to an end.

I love Sam, but blazing fast is not how I would describe his running style.

I think Hurd has Ok/average WR speed.

He's never returned kicks, in my memory.

There's something about him that doesn't translate into a top-flight pass catcher. He catches everything in camp, but something happens to limit his snaps at WR in the reg season. Consistency, hands or something keeps him on the bench mostly.

He has terrible body control and he's not fluid in his route running.

Those things that make Dez and Ogletree good or have the possibility of being good NFL WR's are lacking for Hurd.

But he works hard and will do anything for the team.

Hurd has excellent body control. Its his speed and big play ability that keeps him off the field

I don't know what his top end speed is but he seems to be a bit of a long strider and has sloppy feet. These aren't great traits for a WR to have.

Hurd is slow, but I heard he clocked a pretty good time running backward at the combine.

if money is going to keep Hurd off the final 53 for Jesse freaking Holley, something is seriously wrong with our staff. What is Hurd's salary, 1. something million?

This sounds really old.

I say keep Williams, Austin, Dez, Crayton, Hurd, Ogletree and go a little light at DB since Ball can play both safety and corner.

minsinformation in this thread that you'd think Baghdad Bob was back in action.

31 career receptions, 510 yards, 16.5 yards per catch, 2 TDs

" He's slow ", " he's not quick ", " he's not muscular ", " he can't break tackles ". " he can't make big plays ", blah blah blah..

The reasons that have prevented him from getting on the field have names. In no particular order: Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton, Roy Williams, Miles Austin, Terry Glenn, and those are just at the WR position. His only sin is coming to a franchise as a 21 year old greenhorn in the middle of becoming loaded with talent and not being able to beat that talent ahead of him.

People forget that Miles Austin was in the same, exact situation and if it wasn't for an injury to Roy Williams, he wouldn't be the Pro Bowl receiver he is today because he wouldn't have had a chance to showcase his talent.

Half this freaking board were praying for the Jets to make him an offer that the Cowboys couldn't match just so we could get an extra 2nd round pick and their excuse were the same garbage that's been spewed about Hurd and even about Crayton at times.

His teammates nicknamed Sam Hurd 'noodle' a few years back b/c he's got such good body control. The reason he's not on the field more is that there are better players ahead of him, but Hurd can play WR in the NFL.

invested a 1st round draft pick ( 18th overall ) on a Sam Hurd type receiver back in 1986. Because of injuries, the team's impatient front office, and their eagerness to get rid of a so called " mistake ", they missed out on salvaging a pretty solid career from a not spectacular, but solid player.

Pay close attention and you'll see how similar Hurds and Mike Sherrards styles are.

If you can't beat the talent in front of you, doesn't that same something about the talent you have. Hurd has some talent, but blazing speed is not one of those talents. Miles Austin has very good speed. He is faster than Hurd.

Please, the Cowboys were very patient and understanding with Sherrard. They were not in a rush to get rid of him. He just kept breaking his leg. He did not see the field in 87 and 88 because of his injuries. He moved on to San Francisco in 1989 and again had zero receptions. Sometimes you just have to move forward.

Hurd's situation is not even close to the same. Plus at one time before the leg breaks Mike Sherrard had blazing speed. Hurd does not.

Dallas has not been a rush to get rid of Hurd, either. He is entering his 5th season. Seems as if they have been very patient with him. There is no crime if he does not once again make the team. I am a big Hurd fan, but if he is cut Dallas will be able to move on without him. I hope he does well whether it is still in Dallas or somewhere else.

Depends on the talent ahead of you. If it's the type of talent that the Cowboys have had since Hurd came to the team in 2006, then it doesn't say much, just like it didn't about Austin either. Nobody knew Austin was a pro bowler until he was given a real opportunity to prove it.

a) Nobody said Hurd has " blazing speed "

b) Austin is faster than Hurd, so ?

Bull... The franchise wasn't patient enough with him. Those were the years when they were dressing receivers like Karl Powe and Gordon Banks and Cornell Burbage and Rod Barksdale.. In other words, they had absolutely nothing to lose by keeping him on the roster as long as they wanted or he needed to rehab.

Hurd's situation is not even close to the same. Plus at one time before the leg breaks Mike Sherrard had blazing speed. Hurd does not.

Apparently you have a reading problem. Where did I say both situations were the same ? I said both players STYLES are similar, not that they had the same situation. Sherrard had blazing speed in UCLA and right up until he broke his leg in Thousand Oaks, but not after his injuries when he actually played in the NFL.

Dallas has not been a rush to get rid of Hurd, either. He is entering his 5th season. Seems as if they have been very patient with him. There is no crime if he does not once again make the team. The ONLY reason why the Cowboys would cut Hurd is to save money ( and not much at all, relatively speaking ) and that's a mistake. He's a 25 years old player with 4 years of NFL experience, a special team ace, who's shown he could play receiver when given the opportunity to.

WHO are they going to give his spot to who's better than him ? 26 year old, 2nd year player with little to no NFL experience Jesse Holley ?

Hurd's got everything but speed. Crayton's the same guy isn't he? Or is Crayton faster?

Dez Bryant. That is who is pushing Hurd off the team. Last year Dallas had 5 receivers. They have added Dez. They keep 5 receivers again and someone has to lose a job. Could be Hurd. Could be Ogletree. Even if they do keep 6 receivers, it is unlikely all 6 would be active on game day. So the decision is not just about money.

Sorry, Dallas was very patient with Sherrard. There was talk that he may never play again. I can't fault any team that moves on from that situation. It didn't matter who else Dallas was putting out there to play. What mattered is that Sherrard broke his leg 3 different times, which was very unfortunate. Why keep a guy who was injured on the roster for the 1987 and 1988 seasons. He was on IR during those years.

And in 1988, while they were waiting on Sherrard to heal, they put a guy by the name of Michael Irvin on the field. Maybe you heard of him. There was also Kelvin Martin. Doesn't matter because who played was independent of what was going on with Sherrard.

Another thing. Why do people keep saying "nobody knew about Austin until he was given a chance last season"? These guys are given chances during every practice, every mini-camp, every pre-season game and even during the regular season. Chances that the coaches get to see and base their judgments. Hurd had just as much if not more opportunity as Austin. Austin has capitalized greatly on his opportunities. Hurd has not capitalized to Austin's extent.
