This morning I decided to throw in the Senior Bowl tape to see how our 6th round pick OT Sam Young faired. First things first, Young is strong. On one play in the first half, he pancaked 1st Round Pick Dan Williams. His strength is unbelievable in the running game. Once he locks on to his man, it's over. During the first half, Tony Pike had a clear pocket every time he dropped back, even against a talented South defensive line. He does have a tendency to over-extend his arms when in pass protection.

One other thing I noticed that I didn't hear or read much about was his football intelligence. I saw 3 plays in a row where he had to tell Mike Iupati the protection on the play.

Now, I was only able to watch the first half today but Young looks much better than what you would expect from a 6th round tackle. Maybe he slipped because he can only play Right Tackle and nothing else. However, I think we have a good player here with Young.

I re-watched the SR. Bowl no too long ago and watched Young quite a bit, and yeah, he did look better than what you'd think a 6th rounder should look. I saw some of the same stuff you did, too.

I don't know if he'll pan out or not... but if he could grow into a solid RT in the next couple of years and replace Colombo, then that would have to be one of the more successful 6th rounders we've seen lately.

He is smart and durable... but can he move well enough for the pros?

He's been waaaaay underrated. A four year starter at Notre Dame, and a highly sought after recruit. I watch every Notre Dame game, and this guy is a player theres no doubt he can play. I was ecstatic we got him and Jamar Wall as late as we did.

He'll need to get by with size, strength, length and technique. I wouldn't be so quick to write him off as he does have some favourable physical attributes.

We have done well with some of these under-the-radar four year starters from big conferences. Ratliff and Ball come to my mind immediately.

Ratliff barely played up until his senior year, and even then, didn't start every game.

I haven't watched him for four years. Only video on him. He is not athletic. He is awkward. He has poor balance at times. However, while not looking very good at it he gets the job done. In fact he looks like NOT a player. But it works for him.

He'll have to work on his technique to make it in the pros. IMO. He's definitely tough and strong enough to make it. He's raw is the best I can say. His feet and athleticism are suspect.

Give him a few years to work on his technique and get even stronger. I'd suggest ballet and I'm not kidding. That and martial arts. And a lot of coaching.

This may be Colombo's last year and Barron only signed a one-year tender so if Young shows potential I'm sure he'll make the squad.

Sam Young is a mauler with slow feet. He is beaten by speed regularly, but is fine when he gets his hands on his opponent. He will remind many of Flozell Adams due to his propensity for stupid penalties. Also, he is a limited player in terms of position flexibility in that he can't play LT because of his lack of quickness and is likely too tall to play guard.

I'd rather have a guy who can play more than one position, or at least show the potential for it.

Why if that player may potentially be a starter one day at one position?

That's like saying you wouldn't have wanted Anthony Spencer before he became a starter because he can only play outside linebacker and not inside linebacker.

I've watched the Naval Academy play for a better part of a decade now. Those guys "on a sub" are bonafide Division I athletes. Do not get it twisted.
