Again, nice mock, but I have questions/comments:
#1 ILB Vontaze Burfict | 6'3 250 4.65 | Arizona State - Violence incarnate, nuff said
I was dissappointed with Burfict in the game that I watched. I don't mind the crazy/violent attitude; however, he appears to take a lots of plays off.
Judge Burfict on the previous 2 seasons. He is making "business decisions" this season - trying to rein in his hostile intent to make himself more "draftable". Rob Ryan will unleash him again.
#2 OLB Ronnell Lewis | 6'2 244 4.54 | Oklahoma - nicknamed the "Hammer" b/c of devastating hits; played LB & DE; still raw as pass rusher so may push him to 2nd; will be a better pro (ST monster)
I expect the Boys to be drafting in the late part of the round. Lewis should go late 1st or early 2nd.
Lewis may go higher based on potential and combine "wow" but not based on production. Lewis is new to the DE position, and it shows, only 5.5 sacks this season. Last year he played LB, with so-so results. Guy can flat out hit, but he is very very raw. Immediate impact on ST, for sure.
#3 CB/KR Brandon Boykin | 5'10 185 4.44 | Georgia - Lightning, especially w/ball in hands (D & ST); fastest of elite corners but deep CB draft & size concerns likely push to 3rd
Again, good if CB is not picked earlier.
Boykin is good pick regardless. He is a dual threat. We need a corner, but the Cowboys absolutely must get better in the return game. Boykin is an immediate upgrade there.
#3 TE Ladarius Green | 6'6 240 4.64 | Louisiana-Lafayette - Lethal as a receiver; ultra productive in 2010 (All American); 7 TDs, 18 ypc; played hurt & not as productive in 2011 (trade 2012 pick for another 3rd)
Can he block? Garrett will want an above average blocker.
Green is a playmaker. He is an oversized WR, similar to Jimmy Graham & Aaron Hernandez. Phillips can be Garrett's blocker if Bennett walks. Green will be a weapon from the start, even w/limited reps in 2 TE/4 WR sets.
#4 S Harrison Smith | 6'2 215 4.55 | Notre Dame - Manti Te'o gets more publicity but Smith is playmaker; ballhawk and physical; intangibles
Does he beat out McCray in year one or do they keep 5 safeties?
Cowboys can't be emotional, need to keep the best player. Smith will force them to keep him, he really is that good. Not an uber athlete but the guy can flat out play. Would be the Cowboys best ballhawk of all their safeties. No exaggeration.
#5 OG Amini Silatolu | 6'3 330 5.46 | Midwestern State - Small school standout; Beast in power blocking scheme; was the star on OL that averaged over 200 yrds rushing/game; nasty & strong, surprisingly quick w/heavy hands
The Boys already have mulitple developmental types at OG. They need a year one starter (i.e. 1st or 2nd round) IMO.
You have to watch Silatolu. Kid is a beast.
#6 OLB/TE Jake Bequette | 6'5 271 4.62 | Arkansas - Excellent speed for size; 7 sacks in 2010, 6 sacks in 2011 (injured for 4 games)
Excellent size/speed. Is that TE or DE?
Both. Bequette could be the Cowboys' Swiss Army Knife.
#6 OG Brandon Brooks | 6'4 343 5.32 | Miami (OH) - huge & athletic (supposedly timed a sub 5.0 40) & while oft injured, OL did not allow sack when he he was in game; well suited for power blocking scheme
See comments on #5.
His size & athleticism is worth a practice squad shot.
#7 S Christian Thompson | 6'1 218 4.45 | South Carolina State - can play either safety spot; physical & ultra athletic for size; Auburn transfer
See comments on #4. Can probably slide 7th rounder to practice squad.
Also averages over 20 yds/return. Pure project but crazy measurables - Darren Woodson-esque. Too bad he lacks the instincts, production & character.
Nine picks and no QB?
No OG until the 5th?
Linebackers with the first 2 picks?
Spencer is a FA and James/Brooking may also be gone in 2012. And you know the old saying, you can't have too many LBs in a 3-4. It is a position that cannot have enough explosion & nastiness.
No QB this draft. Romo still has some tread left. This is a position that can wait until next season. Or get one the Cowboy way, in UFA.
As for OL, I opted to address the pivot in FA. Holland & Kosier can still start, or back up if either Arkin or one of the rooks are ready. Silatolu goes higher if not for the small school stigma.
