Does anyone else see a resemblance between their team and ours? They've been talented for a while but have choked when it really matters. I can't even recall how many times I've seen LT sitting by himself on the bench staring behind his black visor as the clock dwindles to another SD playoff loss.
Just a few things that stand out:
Running game: LT & Sproles vs Barber/Choice/Jones. It seems to me that Choice and Barber embody LT and Sproles is similar to Jones, if not he's actually more effective in the screen/return game. LT is a futer HOF and had Barber continued his play from earlier in his career, he would also be in consideration.
Quarterback: Over-intelligent QB with a passion for winning, sound familiar? Both Romo and Rivers are future record setting QB's and if either find a way to bring home a ring or two, most likely HOF'ers, at least definitely within their franchises.
WR: Jackson vs Austin. Both strong physical receivers that can break tackles and are extremely talented. Coincidentally both are just breaking out into the public eye.
DEF: Do I even have to go here? Both 3-4 zone blitzing schemes which prioritize getting to the QB above all else.
Ware vs Merriman: Both are players that must be located by the QB/RB before the snap, on every play. Both extremely effective against the run and pass and both decent to above average in coverage. They are perfection at the 3-4 OLB position.
Newman vs Cromartie: Two of the most athletic/physically gifted CB's in the league. As of late Cromartie is outplaying Newman though I'll leave the comparison between Newman and Cromartie only because Jenkins is the #2, and hasn't done it as long as either corner.
TE: Witten vs Gates
Both will hang their jerseys as top 5 TE's to ever touch a football, barring injury. I'll give the catching edge to Gates and the blocking edge to Witten, though my homerism leads me to believe Witten is better in both categories.
Management: Marty couldn't do it, Bill couldn't do it. Norv still can't do it, and Wade? Still can't do it. Playoff games are kryptonite for both these teams. Is it the cold weather? Is it coaching ineptitude?
The Chargers with all there weapons and talent are under the radar at 9-3, why? The media and most of the public expects a playoff choke, as custom. Had the Cowboys beat the Giants, the Cowboys vs Chargers game could have quite possibly been the most un-hyped 9-3 matchup of the past decade.
Personally, I like the Chargers and wish them luck with their season. Also, I fell they will need it when they play the Cowboys this Sunday. It is now the Cowboys that play for their playoff lives as underdogs.
