I did not get a chance to watch a lot of the game live, but have finished looking at it now. Each game of the season you learn more. Overall, very disappointing loss, but as shown in my title, my point is we know we are 2-2, but that doesn't mean we know we will end up 8-8, although of course that could happen. Much of this depends on our ability to improve going forward. Big picture, I think the San Diego game was about them being the more desperate team and pushing through to make the plays that win the game.
More specifically here are my thoughts. I think most of the issues are correctible, although that doesn't guarantee they will be corrected.
1. I though Romo was awfully good. He has been better than solid so far this year. Anyone who takes a lot of issues with his game here, I'm not sure what you're seeing. The gifs put up earlier in a thread are telling. Most of the time Romo got the ball to the right place. He was let down by drops by his receivers. If I were to nitpick one thing it would be that he does look to Witten a little too much IMO. An example, in the 2nd quarter on the drive with the long field goal attempt there was a manageable third down and Romo tries to cram it into Witten. When the best cover safety is on your tight end I think it may be better to look elsewhere. But this is a minor deal.
2. San Diego was able to get a lot of quick passes that gained 10 yards or so. Rivers was getting it out fast and they were completed and I think there were just way too many easy ten yard completions. Hopefully we can tighten up our zone coverage a little, because I think we have to make teams work a little harder to drive down the field. We are still early in our development of Kiffin's scheme and I would expect improvement.
3. Claiborne was not good. Mainly I think he has to be more aggressive in his coverage. He gives cushion and doesn't challenge the receiver enough. I think physically he has the ability so I'm not giving up on him. If he could get some interceptions to make people pay for attacking him, it would change things a lot.
4. A key sequence in the game was the two drives after we went up 21-10. Our offense scored to make it 14-10, then we got the pick six to make it 21-10. With a little over a minute in the half, San Diego easily drives the field and gets a field goal. Then San Diego takes the 2nd half kickoff and drives for a touchdown. So by the time the offense takes the field it is 21-20. It would have been great to get a stop on at least one of those two drives.
I think the theme is to get better defensively. You can't give up 400 yards passing with 80% completion rate and expect to win many games. We need to get better in zone and tackling people quicker and Claiborne needs to get better.
I don't look at this game like the Seattle game from last year, where we were thoroughly outclassed.
