Saquon Barkley hints he could retire as soon as next year to go out like Barry Sanders

Exactly........I hate the Eagles with the best of them but Barkley is a good kid. My guess is he will continue playing as long as he's having fun and is healthy.

BTW.... The Giants' GM should be fired. I remember Barkley begging to continue his career as a Giant.
If only zeke sat out as much as Barkley he might still be playing.

It's been said that if a player is talking about retiring then said player is already retired. They just don't realize it.
Yeah, but it was a direct question in the interview. He said when he decides to retire it will be an immediate decision. It might be next year, 2 years, 4 years...

He didn't say he was already thinking about retiring.

You may not have much say in your retirement plans Mr. Barkley.

The Eagles running back might not be playing in the NFL much longer

One of the most shocking retirements in NFL history came in July 1999 when Barry Sanders stunned the league by announcing that he was done playing football after 10-year career with the Detroit Lions where he made the Pro Bowl 10 times. It's not often that you see a player retire at the top of his game, but that's exactly what Sanders did, and now, nearly 30 years later, Saquon Barkley is thinking about doing that same thing.

During an interview with Chris Long on the latest edition of "The Green Light" podcast, the 28-year-old Barkley was asked if he would be a guy who ends up retiring early or if he would play until the wheels fell off. The Philadelphia Eagles running back then proceeded to give a pretty surprising answer: Barkley said he might consider retiring as soon as next year.

"I'll probably be one of those guys that it'll be out of nowhere. I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah it's over,'" Barkley said. "I don't think I will ever lose that passion. I'm just a competitor. ... The competitive nature is always going to be there."

Barkley is well aware that Sanders retired while he was still one of the best running backs in the NFL and it seems that he's starting to give some serious consideration to also going out that way.

Yes he said that but I didn't believe him but I can see this as posture and he just got two years $40 million and this is a send out call to the Eagles that he might want even more if they want him to continue this doesn't feel like Barry Sanders this feels like a player is going to want more money in the future...

We all know Barry was frustrated with the Detroit Lions they weren't gonna win anything there was no reason for him to continuing beat up his body mentally and physically for a losing team this is a far different situation..... Hey we should encourage him to do so LOL

If Barkley retires next year is he a HOFer? He already has Terrell Davis like rushing stats in his career but is needing one more SB to truly equal Davis level.
You do realize the barometers change,

ezekiel Elliott blew away terrell Davis just stat wise in numbers etc he had great numbers.. No sbs But do you blame the running back like any other player for happened to be not on a team going to Super Bowls... I mean what did Barkley do with the New York Giants?? He didn't look like a Hall of Famer.. Think the same thing about Matthew Stafford he was the same player he was in Detroit didn't carry that team to anywhere even with good stats but he wins a Super Bowl with the Rams throwing a league leading amount of interceptions throwing two interceptions in the Super Bowl but all of a sudden now he might be considered for the Hall of Fame because he ended up on a great team...

I mean right now derek Henry same way I believe he has a lot better numbers than Barkley and any of these players playing recently in the last ten years need to break the 10K mark to be considered 1st ballott.. IMO that's the new MIN mark

Just remember when Terrell Davis played that wasn't the mark everything changes I mean look at how little stats the Chicago Bears Galy sayers.. When you look at his stats they're very average I mean they're really good but he had no Super Bowls no rings and yet he ended up in the Hall of Fame makes not a whole lot of sense to me but I get it think about how long ago that was he came closer to that current mark of what people considered Hall of Fame material but he wouldn't make it nowadays... I don't care about your potential if you don't have the numbers or the rings or both it's going to be hard to consider...

To answer your question he may be a Hall of Famer with two Super Bowl rings and really good numbers but it might not be first ballot now if he plays long enough to break 10,000 and has two Super Bowl rings then yeah he'll be considered for sure even first ballot...

barkley simply does not have the stats or skins (All Pro, etc) to get into the HOF

I was ambivalent about Terrel Davis getting in myself

Gale Sayers stats were not what mattered

You look at game film of him and he was incredible in the open field
I have never seen a better one ever
there were times when it looked like everyone else but him were in slo mo

Certainly by the numbers he should hot have gotten in; he never fully recovered from that knee injury

I remember the debate about Davis getting in was that he shined only for a short period/ If I remember correctly, the argument for him was partially based on Gale Sayers getting in when his greatness was also brief.

Barkley has only had one really outstanding season; that should not get you in the HOF
and since it was in 16 games getting just over 2000 yds is really not all that great.

..personally, I think he got lucky last year. Sometimes you catch lighting in bottle or on your arse.. .;)..

Dont feel he'll do that again in 25'.

he did not suck; he did not shine; but he certainly was not the worst actor around
clearly your personal dislike of him has something to do with this ridiculous claim
Correction, he was the most middling actor in cinematic history. Along with Frankie Avalon. :)

What was luck? Playing for the Eagles? Defenses constantly having trouble stopping him? Playing alongside a quarterback that can also run the ball? Were the other running backs that have rushed for over 2,000 yards in a season lucky, too? Or were they actually all very good and Barkley just lucky?

I think you have to have some luck to get over 2000
no injuries
very good O line
a defense good enough keep the game close enough to keep running the ball

I do find it ironic that the Eagles can manage to bring in someone like Barkley while the Cowboys can only manage to bring in leftover RB's and or a washed up Zeke.

I am sure this will be GM Jethro's plan moving forward, hoping Barkley retires early.
