I readily concede that I've been horribly inaccurate at mock drafts over the years but no sense in sparing myself the embarrassment this year. I'm anticipating we trade out of the first to the second and pick up an additional third, possibly for a team looking for a WR.

The selections:

R2. Ronand Darby, CB, FSU

R2. Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke

R3. Xavier Cooper, DT, WSU

R3. Daryl Williams, OT, OU

R4. Javorius Allen, RB, USC

R5. Frank Clark, DE, UM

R7. Ty Montgomery, WR, Stanford

R7. Cedric Reed, DE, UT

The only unusual name here is Tomlinson. I think he competes for a starting LG right off the bat and provides insurance and continuity should Frederick go down with an injury. The rest of the list consists of the usual suspects.

Don't like Javorious Allen at all. Much rather have Jeremy Langford around that spot, but may have to spend the 3rd on him.

I debated this pick and am wondering which backs in the draft, apart from Gurley and Gordon, offer significantly more than we currently have on the roster.

I would feel ok if Randle was trust worthy. He is not. I think McFadden can be a good role player but as a back with any meaningfull carries he is very sub. Williams and Dunbar are both fringe NFL players, and that may be generous

Yeah, that's what forced my hand.

As pure talents, Randle MAY be able to compete with an Allen or Davis in TC, but not any of the round 2 guys like Ajayi, Coleman, Abdullah or Yeldon. With any back taken in the 5th ( I would even say any draft worthy back) is likley to be better then Dunbar and Williams.

I can even see those two getting beat out by a UDFA

A plug and play guard makes lots of sense. Zack Martin can always be your swing tackle in an emergency.

Why Darby? He is fast but that's about it. He is far from polished and is a bit stiff in change of direction.

I think the one wild card on our roster is Ryan Williams. But if we want a dirty yards player and can't get one of the top 2 guys I think Langford is the next best option. He also has good speed, is shifty, probably the best receiving back and is a really good pass blocker. Just a good all around back.

I like it.

Funny, virtually every Cowboy fan mock has Frank Clark in it.

Of the dbs we've shown interest in, he seems most likely to be there in a trade down, although his counterpart would be an option as well.

Mostly likey, Darby to me reminds me of Tnew a bit, great speed and mirroring but isn't going to get INTs. I like Tomlinson a lot but I don't feel like OL is a luxury we can afford at 60. I think we need if S Randall is available in rd 2 we would strongly consider him as our first pick and no doubt we take him if for some reason he's there at 60. I think Rowe could on our radar at 60 also. Other than that I like Coleman and Duke at RB but either will require a second rd pick.

I actually think there are a number of late round guys that could push for time at LG and backup TFred..... shaq mason, Adam Shead, max Garcia...and make Berny expendable.

Like the other picks a lot

An anonymous NFL scout told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that if "there's a first-round guard in this draft and he's not a conversion it's" Duke OG Laken Tomlinson.
"He's a plug-and-play, start-first-day right or leftguard," he said. "He plays better than (Chance) Warmack. He's big, athletic, he can pull, he can block at the point, he's smart. He might be a great center, too, if you tried him there." Tomlinson is sharp and wants to be a doctor after his playingdays are over, but scouts do not question his love for the game. "He looks better on the hoof than any subject in the draft other than Scherff," another scout said. "Great kid, smart (Wonderlic of 23). But how many Duke linemen have there been? You can't name them. Plus, he gets over his toes. He's top-heavy." Apr 26 - 2:17 AM
