I didn't see this posted elsewhere. I'm not taking a position one way or another, but it does go to show you that a player's perspective on opposing players can really differ from a fan's.

Scandrick: Davone Bess better than Wes Welker

By Calvin Watkins
ARLINGTON, Texas -- After Dallas' 20-19 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Thanksgiving Day, Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick was asked about the Dolphins receivers.

Scandrick is of the belief that Miami's Davone Bess is a better slot receiver than New England's Wes Welker.

On Oct. 16 against the Cowboys, Welker, covered mainly by Scandrick, finished with six catches for 45 yards and one touchdown. Scandrick covered Welker on the touchdown reception.

Thursday, Bess finished with just two catches for 29 yards, one of which was a 24-yarder. But the receiver must have made an impression on Scandrick.

"Davone Bess is better than Wes Welker," Scandrick said. "Better than Wes Welker. Better than Wes Welker. Stronger, little bigger in the lower body. He’s better, he’s faster than you think he is, stronger than you think he is in a different system, and I’ve been covering him since he was at the University of Hawaii." ...

It's all about the supporting cast for WRs. Talent and ability are merely prerequisites.

If Wes Welker was still a Dolphin and Davone Bess was a Patriot, it would be Bess putting up the big numbers.

Take a look at Laurent Robinson and his career pre-Romo. Yeah, I rest my case.

On pure talent, he very likely may be better but in the NFL you are judged by your results. If you really think about it, Jason Witten doesn't look more athletic, stronger, faster, etc. than several other tight-ends in the league, yet he gets results almost every game.

Bess is a very underrated player. I'd take him over Robinson. He is a better player right now than Dez. Is he available any time soon?

I respect Scandrick's opinion, since he got to cover both guys, but it's hard to argue that point when the numbers are what they are. Then again, Welker does have one of the best QBs throwing him the ball.

Some guys match up better than others for whatever reason, I think that's probably what lead to Scandrick saying that.

Bess is a good player, but he's not better than Welker.

I wonder how much of Scandrick's comments are related to what Jordy Nelson was talking regarding the "disrespect" he perceives being a white receiver.

Why was it necessary for Scandrick to compare Bess with Welker?

Did a reporter make the comparison first?

We're not in the AFC East. Why try to demean Welker?

Of course Scandrick doesn't think much of Welker... He's the only white guy Scandrick has been able to cover. :p:

Really though, I think everyone knows Bess is a good talent. He, like all the Miami WRs, just doesn't have a QB to get him the ball.

That made me laugh, literally.
