Not sure if this defense is correctable but if you don't look far better this week versus the Giants offense it may be time to pull the plug on the Mike Nolan experiment. Nolan was always the least awe-inspiring of McCarthy's hires and the results have been abysmal thus far.

I understand 4 weeks is nothing and this is a pandemic season but if you make a mistake the best time to correct it is now. If you can't decide if it is mistake then perhaps "you" are the problem.

Weird new debate is if the offense turning it over too much or the defense being the league's worst are more to blame for the sad 1-3 record.... Nothing wrong with saying both. All that said I watched every game of Pat Mahomes Jr's college career. Biggest knock by pro scouts? He turned it over too much. I wonder why he turned it over so much? Perhaps because Tech had the same defense they do in Dallas now... i.e. the worst possible.
--Teams that are behind turn it over more and teams that turn it over more are often behind. Chicken-Egg debate.

I'll never understand fans and their obsession with player salaries. No faster way to see a guy be burned at the stake then see him get a big contract. There are some young, cheap players playing like absolute TRASH. And they catch a few jokes but no real vitriol. But a vet who's done it before, fallen off and now been paid? Katie, bar the door.
--Most places you/we work don't disclose salaries for this reason.
--Maybe sports leagues should stop disclosing exact contract details and just talk length and status.

Every coaching change tends to elevate some guys and expose others. The guy most exposed on this defense is probably Jaylon or Jourdan Lewis. Offense is harder to say but Tony Pollard and Connor Williams sure haven't stepped forward.

I'd look to replace 3 of those 4 and move Jaylon to SAM. --you owe him too much GTD to cut him. --dang contract details!! lol.

Xavier Woods effort comments were a poor choice of words in an honest moment of reflection. He's getting killed for it and thus why as an agent I'd tell my athlete to never speak to media unless absolutely necessary. That will likely cost him money in free agency.

Bright spots? Give me CeeDee Lamb, Trysten Hill, Tyler Biadasz. Hill is rated terribly by PFF but I watch the games and he's the only DL getting any penetration at all. If Connor McGovern was as good as Biadasz we could bench CWill and feel good about this OL going forward.

If I were to fire Nolan next week I'd prefer not to simply promote from within. I'd be looking at Marvin Lewis, Wade Phillips or if I DID go in house it'd be George Edwards. --secondary is legitimately awful but also has zero talent to work with given injuries and lack of FA signings. Those are all get through the year moves.

I'm sorry, but Trysten Hill has been bad.

disclaimer: I was away this past weekend so I didn't see the game and haven't mustered up the desire to watch it on the DVR yet so maybe he played like Aaron Donald last week...

Good write-up. I would add Diggs to the bright spots list. He hasnt been perfect but, in my opinion, he has been the best CB so far this year. He has been on the wrong side of a few dimes but was in near perfect position to make a play and only missed by inches.

This D is bad or has played bad. I refuse to believe that players like DLAW and Griffen all of sudden suck. Wanna fix this D a few quick steps

* Any play in the play book that has Dlaw or Griffen standing up - rip it out and throw it away. They play with their hand in the dirt every snap for the rest of the season.
* Go to bump and run man coverage with some Zone thrown in from time to time. Most every breakdown in coverage has been players in zone not knowing what to do. remove that thought process - see the man in front of you - don't let him catch a pass.
* Get JSmith off the field until he learns what gap he should be in and when
* Fine any player seen not going full speed at any point before the whistle blows
* Get the offense to not turn the ball over every game

Fixed. We don't need to be the 85 bears, just somewhere not horrific would be good enough.

I don't expect a rookie making squat to produce like an All-Pro. I do expect someone getting paid the most in the league at his position to play better than a rookie making squat. I get it, it is Jerry's fault for paying the players more than they are worth, but we are not talking about guys who are just underperforming a little. We are talking about guys who are stinking up the joint.

Possibly. We should beat the Giants like a drum. If we don't, we need to do some serious self evaluation as a franchise.

It's both. If either of one of those things had not happened we could be 4 and 0.

I'n not sure why salary cap DOESN'T matter to you. Contract price is opportunity cost. Signing Tank cost you an opportunity to spend those cap dollars somewhere else. I like your posts, and you are a great poster. You are smarter than that. You know cap hit matters a great deal. Performance should meet or exceed the cap hit of that player---at least if you want to win games.

Every coaching change tends to elevate some guys and expose others. The guy most exposed on this defense is probably Jaylon or Jourdan Lewis. Offense is harder to say but Tony Pollard and Connor Williams sure haven't stepped forward.

Agreed. I'm a bit concerned about Pollard's play. CW should be benched. He sucks.

Jaylon is frustrating. I think he has the ability. I'm not ready to write him off yet, but to say he is underperforming his contract is an understatement.

Xavier Woods effort comments were a poor choice of words in an honest moment of reflection. He's getting killed for it and thus why as an agent I'd tell my athlete to never speak to media unless absolutely necessary. That will likely cost him money in free agency.

I've never bought the hype on Woods. Heath was a better player, and the results of this season are bearing that out. I never understood the hate for him.

I'm not completely buying in on Hill, yet, but he is playing much better than last year. It sort of flies in the face of the complaints about Nolan though.

Wade would be a good stop gap. But that ship has probably sailed.
I'm not big on Marvin Lewis.

sorry busy work day so a lot of replies in one thread.

1. Aldon Smith: Very fair contender for a bright spot. And definitely a guy who can look good in this scheme. I hope he isn't a 1 year rental and that he doesn't wear down after being out so long. He was flat washed out of plays last week so I left him off here.
2. Trevon Diggs: Diggs is a rookie forced into action about 8 weeks too early. The gap between he and CeeDee Lamb right now is a lot more than 1 round IMHO. I'm not down on him but can't stretch to bright spot. He really needs to be back on the bench many snaps. His passer rating allowed is one of the worst in all of football.
3. Player salaries: It is the way the system works. Guys basically apprentice on their rookie deals making very little money if drafted outside the top 10 or so. Then they get paid a ton because the market pl;ace warrants it for their position and skill level. So fans hate dudes for earning what they are worth and never accounts for the years of underpaid work product. It's fan immaturity and a great trick by the owners imo.
Example: Is DLaw worth 17M in cash this year? Nope. Is DLaw worth 70m across his 10 NFL seasons? Yup.
4. Trysten Hill: Hill is the ONLY interior DL getting ANY penetration or pressure. He's not making any plays off it but he is getting movement and that's a large positive compared to sitting all last year. His quickness is a useful tool but he needs to get stronger and finish plays once in the backfield.

If the gnats run up and down the field without SB, yes something has to give. This will be the easiest team you will play all season.

What you said make a lot of sense but as far as if Nolan would get fired I would want a temp DC from within this team that was first hand knowledge of all the players on defense and not bring someone from the outside that doesn't.
