Scenario: McCarthy takes Dallas back to the playoffs next year

It's a tough call for me. I could see them offering Kellen Moore the HC job as well. Same goes for Quinn.

I like all three coaches. But I can see McCarthy staying or going.

All the teams with good QBs have coaches with longevity.

If Moore becomes HC, I will become one of the Jerry Haters.
Though I am not a Jerry lover either, but I don't hate the guy.

Thats kind of tough call because this team is very talented. Over achieving for them would be a SB. McCarthy has to make it to the NFC championship game to stay.

Management is not gonna see this team as 'overachieving' and except playoff failure as a try effort. There is way too much high expectations for that.
What i don't get from management is it seems like McCarthy is being short-changed and handcuffed to where he is limited to being a walk around HC only.

This isn't McCarthy's offense, there doesn't seem to be anything that's a part of the Packers offense, seems like it's all been placed by management to be Kellen Moore offense
only. And i've long had my suspicions that the new DC role of Quinn, was placed by management than McCarthy, who brought in one of the worst DC, defenses in Cowboys history
in Mike Nolan.
Sumthin' i really believe was a sure blackout count mark vs McCarthy in the eyes of management.

Of course the Jones will publicly speak highly of McCarthy, deny any reports that theres' inside doubts and discontent against him, ..until there's an early round playoff exit.

If we don't make the playoffs for whatever reason- even if there's a Dak serious injury, i am one of those that surely think Big Mac is done for in just 3 seasons here.
And yes, the two names immediately brought into fold will be most definitely Dan Quinn and Sean Payton.
And which of the two do the Jones coveted the most ?

As long as the Cowboys are getting to the tournament, McCarthy will continue to be the head coach. Making the tournament is a good thing so why would you think McCarthy would lose his job? What would happen is it would get harder to retain Moore and Quinn.

i used to drink the kool aid for Kellen Moore possibly being the next young HC for Cowboys - especially after the 1st half of the season.
but the 2nd half offensive slump vs the more competitive teams immediately doused that fire.

Knows when to give and delegate duties and tasks among his assistant - and when to intervene himself when tough times call for it. ..?
Will he make adjustments when he needs to immediately in-game ?

It's a huge difference between an X's and O's offensive coordinator vs a legit Head Coach., imo.

On the other hand, Dan Quinn is also a great coach. So I could see him moving up. It's just a really tough call. I don't hate McCarthy. I'm not in love with him. But I could see us going either way on the coaching staff.

Context is everything. What did they overcome in the season? Why/how did they lose the playoff game? Did the offense actually stay consistent and improve over the season and not fall off in the playoffs? How did we lose the playoff game? If the players are bought into McCarthy and Quinn and Moore are doing well and would stay if he stayed then I likely would give them all one more season. That would also coincide with Dak's contract if I'm not mistaken so if they really wanted to start over if it doesn't pan out they could. If they lost a playoff game the way they did against SF again then yeah, I'm probably moving on from McCarthy. If they play well and lose it due to some freak circumstances like the Dez catch then I'm more inclined to give him one more year.

Frankly since i have my suspicions that this management is no longer entrusting in McCarthy long term, i think it will come down to Dan Quinn vs Sean Payton.
The Jones have always been infatuated with Payton, who they also know him personally upfront, plus they'll think he's idea to continue the progress with Dak.

Just as they envisioned Garrett and Kellen as the next Payton,..i would think they'll love to be a position to have the chance to acquire the actual Payton here
for many years to come.
That offense will be here and entrenched for year to come.
And for Payton to come here, to give up the trade compensations and contract buyout, the conditions would have to be this becomes his offense, and he's the pathway road
to Dak Prescott.

And despite those that will doubt Payton will want to be here to Cowboys, per power control,.. the more biggest challenge is what would it take per trade compensation
to acquire Payton.

If the Saints think they can get the world for Payton, they'll set the price as so. Multiple high round picks.
Teams are coveting to get that next McVey, Payton.
i don't think it'll be up to the highest bidder, as Payton is gonna be very selective as to where/what team he strongly prefers.

Yes. I'm not a huge fan of McCarthy but if the team overachieved then bring him back. I would say if the defense overachieved and the offense stayed the same then hire Quinn as HC.

Years ago when Jerry used to fire HC's after three years. I couldn't help but think this team is going to stink for years to come. Because you're changing out philosophies when you change out head coaches. So I came to the conclusion that every HC should be given at least 6 years.

They're going in the right direction defensively. Would hate to see McCarthy leave without completing our defensive transformation. He should be given his six years to see what happens. Besides who's available that's better than McCarthy?

So the answer to the question is...Yes. Jerry is finally listening to the head coach and everybody seems to be on board with building a better defense.

There is NO WAY you give every coach 6 years. You can tell when certain coaches suck. Garrett should have been fired after the 2nd season.

MM is doing a good job and I like what he is doing in the offseasons and the draft. I like his coordinators for the most part.

I doubt I would fire a coach after making the playoffs unless we were some leading contender, which we arent.

I'm pretty sure the Chiefs are glad they gave Reid six years. I'm pretty sure the Browns are upset they didn't give Belichick six years. The Rams and McVay, happy. The Colts and Dungy, happy. Saints and Peyton, happy.

The truth is... Most head coaches that win a Super Bowl prior to their sixth year as a coach, did so because they didn't have to build that team from scratch. And that's were you get guys like Tomlin, Switzer, and Gruden winning a SB so soon. The one exception that I know of was Jimmy Johnson. But most coaches need about six years to prove themselves, IMO.

If they go back to the playoffs again it will likely have a lot to do with Quinns defense. Consequently, there will be hc opportunities for him, again. We may reach the point where we either promote him or lose him. If MM can't get past the first round it's going to be hard justifying keeping him, only to lose Quinn.

I agree but something that may work in our favor is a lack of openings. Of course things could change but a quick look shows only 3, maybe 4 coaches starting the season on the hot seat ( Seattle, Arizona, Carolina, and Dallas ). I read a tweet asking why Jerry extended his contract with two years left. One thinking was a tradeoff........when Quinn decided to stay, Jerry gave him a nice raise in exchange for tacking on another year or two to his contract.

I think this may be a great thread, but I veered off the road when you referred to it as a tournament.....it's the playoffs. Tournament is an east coast thing that Parcells brought with him, that needs to stay in NJ. I cringe whenever I hear it used in reference to football.

Need more understanding of variables.

• What was the injury situation? I mean, if he gets into the playoffs with a team that lost Dak, Diggs, Parsons, Zeke, Pollard, Smith, and Tank Lawrence all year by game 3......that's a pretty remarkable coaching job.
• What seed? Did he get the 3rd seed with some big injuries, or did we get the 7th seed with relative health?
• How did we play in the regular season? Was our schedule more cupcake than expected and we just beat a bunch of losers but lost every time to contenders? Or were the Cowboys the bully on the block?
• How are we exiting the playoffs? Same story? We get run all over and can't move the ball on offense because of being one trick pony? Or did we lose in overtime to a superbowl contender a la the Bills loss last year?

It's tough to evaluate McCarthy going into the year. Philadelphia and Washington got better rosters, NYG probably got a better coaching staff, whereas the Cowboys probably got a little worse on the roster. The front of the schedule looks pretty difficult, but definitely gets easier as the year goes on.

I can say this - Sean Payton is NOT an option to me. He will cost 2 first round draft picks to the Saints. Sean Payton is not 2 first round draft picks better than Mike McCarthy as a coach.

AnyGM worth anything should be able to make a call before 6 years if he needs to. Everyone makes mistakes. Its those of us that realize our mistakes and move on from them quickly that carry an advantage. Those that let their errors ride long or fail to admit their mistakes will continue to struggle.
