Schottenheimer: Open competition at RT

Weird how fans think a guy like Nate Thomas, a seventh rounder who didn't play a snap his rookie year and only played a handful of snaps at RT before playing pretty well at LT the one and only game he started, now sucks because of 16 or whatever plays when he came in to a situation where we were way behind and had to throw practically every down.

But Tyler Guyton gets to play his entire rookie year -- except for when he was mysteriously benched for career spare Chuma Edoga -- and half his second year, and people say he's still developing and we need to be patient with him.

I get that there are only 17 games so we put a lot of weight on each one, but can people have a little perspective on things?
Really good perspective.

Well, I would counter argue that other teams, ie., real football organizations do this all the time. If a player or player(s) are struggling or the line just isn't performing as a whole, other teams will shuffle existing lineup or bring someone off the bench. In fact, most teams start putting players on notice much earlier than we do. They are professionals. If they can't deal with the expectation they have to perform or run the risk of replacement, they are soft and that may be part of the issue to begin with.

No one is talking about occassional reps. We are talking about sustained level.

As this post was specifically about the RT, let's discuss. I have been a Steele supporter even though I have acknowledged his limitations especially post injury. They saw his play last year, offseason & now are in the 11th week of the season. They should have already been signaling to him that they were looking to make a change. Physically, he just can't deal with the speed \ lateral agility needed. If we hadn't drafted Booker, I would propose sliding him to RG & letting Thomas play RT. There isn't any reason not to try something different.
On this we wholeheartedly agree. The biggest question for me was how bad Thomas looked in his stint on the right side. I suppose we could chalk that up to just not being prepared. But he was thrust into playing when Guyton got hurt and arguably played better than Guyton had been. Frankly when they put him in for Steele it might have been a downgrade. Which is saying something.. Hopefully they used the bye week to solidify whatever their plan is.

This is a 1st. At-least it's something rarely done here.
They are finally moving in a direction thats been so obvious to everyone else for a long time. I have been saying this for 3 seasons now about TS. This guy just does not block anyone, ever. I have even made a few posts here that he should just donate his paycheck to charity. He is a total liability to the offense, so kudos to Schotty!!!!

I understand your frustration but this is an overstatement. He was well above average before injury. Did the quickest defenders win some? Yes. But there are only a handful of those guys in the league at any one time. He wasn't losing you games even against those guys.

Since the injury, yes he struggles quite a bit with quickness. Through it all though, he is a very good run blocker. So, to say he never blocks anyone is quite unfair.

Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami

Mauigoa's brand of bully ball should make him sufficiently attractive for the Cowboys, with his stout protection also coming in handy to counter the NFC's many imposing pass rushers.

I would happily take him at the 10-12 range if still available.
You're surely on the right track. The Cowboys' FO is most likely to wait for the next draft to take their next choice(s) for the next in line to become Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, that's simply their routine way of adding talent to the roster. Spending huge amounts of $$$ for experienced players just isn't their preferred way to do business. That's why this team has spent 30 years minus playing in a Super Bowl. The Jones Family is content to bide their time and enjoy their wealth, awaiting the draft.

whois getting cut pastime he mentioned a competition for #2RB someone got cut.

Yep, Guyton not improving.
Heck, regressing even.
Disagree, he is improving. Maybe where you would want him timewise at his draft pedigree, but if you focus on the plater irrespective of draft status the improvement is about what I would expect. And the flashes show he can be worth the effort.

yeah If I coached a team the open competition would be ongoing all the time.

i'm pulling for cornelius.
then i will tell anyone who listens that we're cousins.(shared name).

but i bet nathan thomas gets it.

Jerry is running out of time.

Jerry is running out of time.
Yep, I think he'd aware of fact that his age, alone, isn't working in his favor to resolve these current problems, especially with the defense. He's hesitating to decide what to do regarding his DC and the scheme that he's implanted. He's obviously reluctant to fire him in midseason. We'll soon see if this continues or if adjustments might be made to change things noticeably. We'll tight and hope for the best. It won't be shocking if it takes until the offseason to change, however. It's just a tragic mess.

Nate Thomas stunk after replacing Terence Steele. Let's hope Cornelius performs much better. If not, guess which position the Cowboys will use one of those two 1st round picks on this next draft?

:banghead:

I thought the new Oline Coach was a lineman whisperer who can make the linemen better?

Thomas probably should be at LT since he has performed well there.

Keep Tyler Smith at LG

Zack Martin is the team’s third highest cap impact this year at $16.5 million.

We should get him off the couch and plug him in at RT for the rest of the season.
