Apparently, Marty Schottenheimer didn't need a playoff win to keep his job.
Chargers ownership has informed both general manager A.J. Smith and Schottenheimer that the head coach will not be fired after a first-round playoff loss to the New England Patriots, FOXSports.com has learned.
It was strongly speculated that Schottenheimer would be fired if the Chargers did not win last Sunday's playoff game against New England. The speculation grew even stronger when ownership was largely silent on the subject in the two days following the disheartening loss.
Team sources said Schottenheimer's contract would not be extended, but the contracts of his assistant coaches would, giving them more stability.
The Chargers finished the regular season with the NFL's top record at 14-2, but the early playoff exit brought Schottenheimer's career postseason record to 5-13
