Specifically, Adams is fascinated by what happens to a defense when the run strength of an offensive formation changes suddenly and at high speed. Some teams have tight ends (or even receivers) quickly sift from the outside of the formation into the middle gaps as the ball is snapped. For the running back, it’s like a miner using a smaller dynamite blast to clear rubble before the big sticks are used. For the defenders, it either moves a gap or creates a new one to think about in their assignments. Their math problem changes at the latest possible time.

“I think (it’s good) any time you’re messing with people’s eyes,” said Adams. “You’re still dealing with human beings.”

The way the offense operated drew even more attention. These were not the typical Dallas Cowboys. Schottenheimer paired his West Coast passing concepts with Adams’ physical, diverse run scheme to create a system that was modern in its finesse and explosiveness and also a gritty throwback.

Dallas uses motions and shifts in both the run and the pass game; their rushing attack features powerful gap concepts but also layered, stretching zone runs. They change formations before and at the snap. The Cowboys play fast — their passing game weaponizes pace. They want to chew up all of the grass on the field.

I’ve always felt that this is essentially the last step the Cowboys organization would have to make to really make a Super Bowl run even over rosters.

Yes, we’ve had some top heavy rosters that have had some flaws, but we still had a few rosters that had lightning in a bottle potential that could’ve gone all the way if certain things broke right.

The thing that we’ve never had in the post Parcells era is an innovative and modern scheme paired with good in-game management from our coaching staff on both sides. If we are at a point now where our defense is running one of the more multiple and highly effective Fangio schemes, and our offense is running a modern hybrid effective offense where our plays and formations aren’t known beforehand as we’ve been ridiculed for in the past; then we genuinely have a chance if the roster is up to par.

In the back of my mind in every playoff game, especially in the divisional rounds. I’ve always known that we have the inferior coaching staff. This is from both a scheme and a game management standpoint. Jason Garrett predictable schemes, Marinelli’s predictable schemes, Mccarthy’s plays that Steve Young laughed about saying the team won’t win running the same old stuff; this might be the first time we have a modern and unique offense that challenges top tier coaches as opposed to being easily shut down by playoff caliber staffs.

No, last year there wasn’t enough of a change against those high power teams to make me think it’s been instituted since 2025, but if the coaching staff indeed takes a step forward in year two, Adams and Schottenheimer have that chemistry and hybrid offense grow to another level plus Parker’s scheme being what it’s billed to be then we might be able to make that step into a schematic advantage in playoff games as opposed to always being the lesser of the two coaching staffs.

When we had Kellen Moore, who has always been more style over substance, McCarthy had to step in because “all Kellen wants to do is light up the scoreboard”

McCarthy changed the offense because it sucked. Moore’s offense relies on elite route running receivers who not only win their matchups but are also capable of making decisions on what variation of a route to run while they are at the line of scrimmage. The QB has to do the same at the same time. Of both aren’t clicking, it fails. The only receiver we had capable of doing it was a CeeDee. The next best was Noah Brown.

Dak is among the best in the NFL at presnap reads so the mess being laid at his feet was a combination of Jerry not knowing what the words coming out of his mouth and the media running with it.

Moore was so locked in on his own “wunderkind” label that he was unable to adjust and the adult in the room, McCarthy, had to step in.

He’s going to have the same problem in New Orleans. He better smarten up because it’s already a flashing warning sign with a young QB and only one decent WR.
