Scout’s Eye: First Impressions And OTA Leftovers

Witten has never been remotely fast, but there are two things he does that are truly among the game's greats: route-running and flipping his hips.

I invite you to iso and watch him sometime on his routes - textbook every time. Doesn't hurt that Romo knows where to plug it each and every time.

And Romo makes that look easy. A sign of a great QB.

burm is right.

If McClain is disruptive as a one we might have one of the best dt tandems in the league!

What bugs me is people act like folks on this board don't know that it's just OTAs and to not have huge expectations or take what the beat writers say with a grain of salt. Like who are you trying to convince? Everybody knows that anything written during this time of the offseason is cotton-candy-filled fluff. So what. It's football...in the dead of offseason. I'd rather read some Broaddus fluff or that Romo is on a pitch count or that the McClain is showing a little more quickness than one seemingly thought than 60% of anything that might end up in the Rant Zone.

Goodness!

Yup.
4 types of posts in off-season.
1. yay we are great fluff.
2. this is what the scheme is and where they are lining up with 9 guys held out.
3. i hate everyone but pay attention to me just the same because without attention i will combust.
4. injury news

Pretty easy to pick the type I want to read.

This! I agree word for word. The writers are dealing with first impressions. If the first impressions are bad then it bodes badly. If the first impressions are good then it gives you hope they can go to the second level. You have to take it one level at a time. If they fail without pads then what chance do they have with pads. if they do well without pads at least they still have time at the plate. They have an opportunity to make the next step and the next step, etc. until they flunk out and give the naysayers satisfaction of their negativism being fulfilled.

Except that sloppy out route.

Preach on, WG. I wonder why some people even bother being "fans" if they can't get excited about DC football news. I enjoy OTA news, if for nothing else because it gives you at least a bit of insight into what the team is trying to do strategy wise and personel wise. Where guys are lining up, etc..

If some people don't care to hear OTA news, feel free not to read the thread or comment. ;)

It's rare that I find myself rooting for a player to make the roster but Ryan Williams is an exception. The rushing talent s already there. Staying healthy and learning this offense, especially blocking schemes, must be his priorities. As a possible backup to Demarco Murray, he could be one hiccup away from being an unrealized, struggling second-rounder to NFL success story. It's all on him.
If there's one thing I can't get excited about in the preseason any more, it's RBs who look great with the ball in their hands but "struggle with blocking". They get cut. Granted, Williams has more pedigree than most, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well said.
For those who don't want to buy into the fluff, so be it. to some it's fluff, only OTA's, no pads, no this, no that.
But to the players and coaches it means evertything. They will see what they have in players, or may have, and what needs adjusted by TC.
Getting players on the correct training, exercises, rehab, diets, camp reporting weights, and much more.

So if Broaddus or whoever fluffs about a player or scheme or criticizes a player. It's news, and take it the way you want. But I would bet...if he fluffs a player saying he looks very good, most will leave it at that, say its only OTA's...but if he says a player looks to struggle a bit then those will run with it and say the guys a bum, bad draft, or whatever.

I don't know, ask all of the LBers and Safeties who still fail consistently to cover him.

Seriously I've never seen a guy who so often looks like he is running in molasses and yet is just open all the damn time.

Slow like a turtle, but he runs great routes and has great hands. He may not have the athleticism of Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, or Vernon Davis, but don't be fooled, old man can still school them young'ins.

Precision route running, elite field vision, and consistency in speed.
