Scout’s Notebook: Impressions From Thursday Practice

Despite being cleared for practice and taking reps throughout the day, when the offense went to Team Period, Tony Romo gave way to Brandon Weeden, who, like his time during the OTA and minicamp practices, ran the first group. Where Romo did get the majority of his work was in the morning walk through and afternoon practice when the offense went against the defense during the Team Blitz Period. These two opportunities were a nice test right out of the box because he was dealing with some off balance throws that tested his back. His first pass of the day was with a blitzing J.J. Wilcox in his face and snapped a nice slant to Dez Bryant on the left side. It was a throw that Romo really had to torque his body to make the throw. In the afternoon session, he came back with a touch pass to DeMarco Murray with Kyle Wilber in between them that was perfectly delivered over the top.
  • It was nice to see Dwayne Harris back in the mix working with the first offense. Harris had three quality catches, one in the morning practice and the other two coming in the afternoon on routes that we normally don’t see him running -- across the field with some depth. Both times Harris, coming right to left, reached up with his right hand securing the ball on the move and continued up the field in space. On the third one, he ran a curl and with the ball high and away adjusted his body back to the left to make the snatch catch.
  • The second offensive lined up this way during the team period: Jermey Parnell at right tackle, Darius Morris at right guard, Ronald Patrick at center, Uche Nwaneri at left guard and Darrion Weems at left tackle. The reason I mention this is because I believe this will be the group we will see in the majority of the preseason games. When Ronald Leary comes back to practice, Mackenzy Bernadeau could line up on the right side for Morris or play center for Patrick. The idea is to have the best backup offensive line in these games so things will run smoothly when trying to evaluate these young running backs and Brandon Weeden.

I like that Romo is giving way to Brandon Weeden in training camp. For all intents and purposes, Romo could pretty much show up and play fine. Weeden absolutely needs the snaps, and it's good that they're giving him those reps with the first team and against first team defense.

Yeah, and I think one of the articles said that Romo was instructing the WRs which is great to help get them all on the same page.

So many weapons and potential mismatches--just need someone to put it all together an attack opponents weaknesses.

Stretching, especially the lower extremities is a big thing this year. Garrett had the Cowboys take a solid 10 min stretch break approximately 1/4 of the way into practice as well as their normal 1/2 point stretch. Any player not giving full attention to the drill was corrected. Looks like Jason Garrett is tired of ham string injuries.

We all are. Good to see this getting addressed from the 1st day. Hopefully it helps.

I've always thought Harris should be more involved in the offense. He's really dynamic with the ball in his hands.

I agree. He is a great returner but he could be excellent on bubble screens and has really shown an ability to make plays. Solid all around player for us.

Unit cohesion, and that is the real deal in the NFL. Internal leadership. People standing up and learning how to make a play when it's needed. This is championship growth...

They are serious about this, and make on-the-spot correction with reinforcement on execution for stretching as well. Pace and execution.

Really nice to hear that JJ Wilcox is looking so good as TC commences. If his coverage has improved as seems to be the case thus far, our safety situation should be much improved over last year. Jeff Heath should benefit from a full offseason of practice through the OTAs, minicamp and the current training camp as well. Many youngsters are getting valuable experience and stand to benefit greatly in furthering their development. This defense has a legit chance of improving substantially more than many expect, imo. If Jakar Hamilton continues to improve as much as is being reported, the safety spot should prosper bigtime.
