On Thursday, 2/26/15, 105.3 The Fan and AT&T hosted the Scouting 101 with Bryan Broaddus event in Dallas, TX. Bryan Broaddus was joined by G-Bag Nation's Jeff Cavanaugh and Ben and Skin's Kevin Turner as they broke down film from the Cowboys vs Packers Divisional Playoff game for a group of around 50 participants. At the start of the event, Bryan Broaddus provided a "Scouting 101 Manual" handout that outlined the traits he looks for in NFL prospects. A transcript of the handout will be provided in another post. The event consisted of a breakdown of almost every Cowboys offensive play from the playoff loss to Green Bay and a series on defense. He, along with Jeff Cavanaugh and Kevin Turner, answered a wide array of questions about the Dallas Cowboys and this year's draft prospects.
The following are some insights provided by Bryan Broaddus in response to questions asked by the audience. Some of these you may already know, some you may not:

  • During the 2014 season, Romo was not allowed to check out of run plays as much as in past seasons
  • Brandon Carr will be moved from the defense's left side to the defense's right side
  • The team as begun speaking with Carr's agent about him taking a pay cut similar to Doug Free. Broaddus believes that Carr is likely to accept the reduction as he likes living in and playing for Dallas and doesn't expect to get a better offer if released to FA
  • The coaches feel that Carr reads and listens to what the media says about him and that this affects his play
  • If forced to choose between the two, the Cowboys would keep Wilcox over Church, but they have yet to find a true FS and won't spend big money on a FA
  • The staff is very concerned about Rolando McClain being in and out of games due to injury. They feel that he mentally "checked out" at times during the season
  • Broaddus feels that Rolando McClain will not give a discount and seeks to gain the maximum FA contract possible
  • As evidenced by his play in 2014, Jason Witten has accepted his role as a point of attack blocker who will see less targets due to Dez, Beasley, Terrance Williams, etc.

Good news regarding Carr reworking his contract. But if what he says about McClain is true? See ya! Too many issues, injuries, and question marks to be paying him big money.

Game 1 gave them a lot of ammunition to save him from himself...

Carr knows a good thing when he see's it.
See Cowboys are not going to sign Mcclain unless the guy comes back for dirt cheap. He's looking for some money, he's gone.
Think Dallas would be good drafting a player like Shaw or Gunter or Rowe, all 3 have played CB and the FS. All 3 have been used as a single high guy, all 3 can play in packages until Cowboys and Church part ways. He isnt going to get another contract from Dallas. He's a UFA in 2017.

Flip a coin and you'd have as much a chance of getting that correctly as Broaddus does.

I really don't have anything against Broaddus but the guy simply isn't any more informed on the team that most posters here.

He's looking for some money and he should get some money, he's a difference maker. You're going to let a young "Top 10" talent walk out the door for 4-5 million a year when you have the 18th ranked defense in the league and up to 50 million in cap space if needed? With Romo on a 3 year window? Coming off a 12-4 season ? That would be a mistake if it was about the money.

As mentioned, I don't think any team is going to give McClain the big money he thinks he is going to get. I believe when it's all said and done the market will set his asking price down to where it should be after some time.

Despite the injuries and despite the fact that the Cowboys think he mentally wasn't all in, I'd still try and bring him back. The guy is too talented and and made too much of a difference for us when he was healthy and into the game.

He is definitely talented, but for one, he's not a 3-down LB. For another, and more importantly, if you can't trust a guy to consistently play up to his talent and not check out at times, then I don't see how you can commit a lot of money to him. How much time did he miss throughout the season, especially at the end? We need LB's, and I'd like to see him back, but I just think he's too much of a headcase, and I bet the team feels the same.

A lot of games he was a 3 down LB.

Did you mean to quote me here? Because all I was saying is that Broaddus acts like he's getting insider info when he really isn't getting much more than the average poster here.

I like Hitchens. A lot.

Yes, I can't believe anything that Broaddus says.

The bad thing is that so many people including other media believe what he says. Fans and media repeat what he says and it grows into these huge false narratives. He kept saying all of last season that Marinelli was going to Tampa.

Broaddus really loves to run that "scouting" thing into the absolute ground as if it still holds any water.

I take everything Broaddus says "not so serious". He seems to be wrong way more than right. Rather about players or just team info in general. Look how long he spewed Marinelli was leaving for TB.
But quite a few on here, said, no way Marinelli was leaving.

I hope McClain stays here. Injuries could have been part of him just getting back into playing mentally and physically. He may have checked out at times in games because of those nagging injuries on and off. But the team would know that better than us. It's just my opinion. If he gets a big contract, it most likely comes from a team needing to improve trying to get to the playoffs.
But I could see a competitive team like the Bengals pursuing him too, but he wouldn't get much of a better deal than if he stayed here.
